Max5 Racing Blog (Mazda MX-5)

  Mk1 MX-5 (x3), Westy
Foreword: This is a copy and paste from a different forum, so it may seem a little out of context at points, but it seems a few CS members are interested too so hopefully it will be useful info :)

Hello all,

After reading Alan's blog on mx5nutz forum (here), I decided it would be good to do something similar, since the amount of info available for people looking to get into Max5 Racing seems to be relatively thin on the ground and/or spread about. I'm going to try and document my 'journey' in one thread, with all the things I needed to consider and buy easily visible.

So, here goes...!

I'm fairly new to MX-5s, got one at the start of the year and have done one trackday at Blyton in it (video - me driving from 7:13 onwards), but have done about a dozen track days over the last couple of years. I still find them great fun, but I am one of those people who likes to try and better myself, and learn new stuff.

My thought process went something like this:

Trackdays are great, but what's next?

Sprints? Hmm. Not great value in terms of £/minute of driving. Need all the safety kit too which isn't all that cheap.

Racing? Hmm. Can end up a bit 'wallet racing'. Not keen on that. Still need all the safety kit... Much better £/minute than sprints though, and can always use the car for trackdays too.

So - racing it is. What's a relatively cheap series where the cars are controlled by fairly strict regulations, and it's not going to just end up with a 'who can spend the most money wins' scenario? Looked at stuff like Formula Vee (single seaters, based on the old aircooled VW Beetle), Formula Ford, Trackday Trophy... then realised I had already driven an MX-5 on track. and it was a bloody brilliant car.

I found out that Ma5da and Max5 were the two series for MX-5s, and while both seem to use a very similar car there appear to be subtle differences. Ma5da has televised races, more sponsorship and seems to be more competitive, whereas Max5 have smaller grids and it looks a bit more chilled out.*

(*Just my feelings after doing some research - I can sense some 'bad blood' between the two championships which I don't want to delve into or drag up!)

For my first racing experiences, Max5 definitely seemed the way to go. With so much to learn already, having less other cars muscling their way past certainly seems like it will make it a bit less stressful!

Ok, so I've decided which series to enter. Time to start looking at cars. Prices seem to vary from around £5k up to £7k, depending on how new the car is and what spec it's got.

All the cars eligible for the series have the same roll cage, tyres, wheels, suspension, no upgraded anti roll bars, very few engine modifications are allowed, no bodywork mods (splitters, flat floors, etc), a plumbed in fire extinguisher, standard calipers and discs etc, but bits like the harnesses, seat, condition of bodywork, exhaust, previous race results and so on seem to dictate the prices.

The spec the cars have to meet is listed in the regulations document, which can be found here.

After a bit more research, I found out there were cars available to 'Arrive & Drive', at pretty reasonable prices. 'rodders' on the forum (Paul Roddison), who runs Roddisons Motorsport, is well worth speaking to if you are interested in this.

Having spoken with a couple of other guys who compete in Max5, I hadn't heard anything but huge praise for everything Paul does, and so far my contact with him has been extremely positive too. Even if it's a weekend or evening, he is always happy to chat!

Anyway, I looked at the costings involved to give it a try for one race or so (more on that later), and decided that I would just go for it. The cars, although initially they seem relatively expensive for a 20-year old vehicle, are extremely well specced and they hold their value amazingly providing you don't bend them!

I'd posted in the Max5 Racing thread saying I was interested in having a go, and Chris (SEO Musketeer) sent me a PM and offered further help (it's his first season too), and a few other chaps were also straight in there with their phone numbers for chats and assistance.

The guys usually get a few paddock passes for each race weekend and these were offered to me free of charge so I could come along and watch. Very friendly, thank you - exactly what you need when trying to get into something completely new!

After an hour on the phone (and a load of PMs) to Chris and a good half hour to Paul (who informed me of a car he had for sale...), my mind was made up. I wanted to get into Max5. You only live once, and that can be taken away/jeopardised so flippin' quickly (this last year has taught me that), so I decided it was all systems go.

Some thinking and an excited sleepless night later, I sent Paul a text asking if I would be able to leave a deposit on the car he had for sale:

75281_258565730906333_179295178833389_503481_1056322712_n.jpg

From here there was no going back! Time to research into what licenses and safety stuff I would need...

I'm still not 100% on the procedure for getting licensed and registered, but it seems to be something like this (anyone feel free to correct me! Don't want to be responsible for misleading information):

- MSA 'Go Racing' pack: £65
- ARDS Test (for National B License): ~£250
- Medical (some tracks have the facility, or your GP): ~£50-100

Edit: Quick update - the medical should be done BEFORE the ARDS test, and the certificate taken with you to the ARDS test so they can sign it all off properly.

Once the above three are done, send the forms off to the MSA with a cheque for ~£51 and your license arrives a few weeks later. Until you hit 45, when you need a yearly medical, it's just the £51 a year fee to keep the license active, which isn't too bad.

Also needed is Max5 championship registration: £75, details are on max5racing.com.

So, my pack is now on the way and I'll be booking an ARDS asap. Looking to try and race at Anglesey on 16th & 17th June, I know the circuit(s) pretty well already so I figure that will reduce the amount of learning... Gonna be tight on time though!

Kit you'll need:

- Snell 2005 (or above) approved helmet. The V2 Pro is about the cheapest available at ~£150 IIRC.

- Race suit, gloves and boots to meet FIA 8856-2000. These don't have an expiry date (but scrutineers could refuse if they look too tatty), so you can get 2nd hand stuff pretty cheap. Also recommended are Nomex (fireproof materal) socks, balaclava and underwear. You can get this stuff from places like Demon Tweeks, plays-kool.co.uk or eBay.

I managed to find a chap who had recently given up sprinting so did me a good deal for all his old gear - £400 for everything required (not bad considering the helmet was less than a year old and £750s worth when new!). Trawl a few sprint club forums and something will pop up I'm sure.

Next: Go and watch at Croft this coming weekend, get the car, try and get it on a track day before Anglesey, and get my ARDS passed. I'll try and update this thread as and when anything interesting happens :)

Cheers!
Adam

Cheers Adam.

Thought a few on here might be interested, I sure am :D

That 25 car was hanging onto the back of a 300bhp monster at Donington back in March, corner speeds were stupid.

Would love to do this just to get the 'buzz' of the grid.

Very interesting reading mate, keep it up!

Haha, come see me at a race and I'll sort you out with one!

Thanks, small update going at the bottom of this post...

Cool Adam didn;t realise you were doing

Yeah, pretty late and quick decision! Probably just Anglesey this season (16-17th June), and a few trackdays to get used to the car.

Good read mate. Good luck with everything, look forward to updates

Thanks Jay, I'm gonna try and keep it updated as well as I can, hoping someone else will be able to use it as a guide.

Good read mate. Hope to read on your progress. Good luck.

Thank you!

Great read, found it very interesting as I'm looking at doing a similar level of championship next year!

Ah awesome, well if you have any questions don't hesitate to give me a shout. Obviously not the best qualified to answer but I'll give it a go! What are you thinking of racing?

Thanks! Yeah the car seems excellent, won its class first time out so I have no excuses...

awesome adam, will you be doing donnington or anywhere close to me? im defo up for coming giving a hand or what not.

Cheers mister. Don't think there is a race at Donny, and not gonna do too many tip season, but gonna do some trackdays to get used to the car, 30th May I think is the next one.

Got my MSA pack yesterday, currently sat in doctors waiting room with a bottle of piss next to me. Things are progressing fast! Hoping to book ARDS test at Oulton for 1st May...

Well, that's the medical over and done with. £30 lighter for 15 mins work, but was cheaper than I was expecting given some of the other prices I've seen!

Used my 'normal' GP (I say 'normal' as I haven't seen one for 11 years!) and everything was fine. Was pretty nervous beforehand as I had no idea what to expect... Tests were:

- Check heart/chest with stethoscope
- Poke stomach (assuming checking for evidence of any hernia etc)
- Test eyes with and without any corrective lenses
- Check medical records for field of vision, colour blindness and any other physical/mental things that could affect the applicaton
- Blood pressure and heart rate
- Provide a urine sample (which was tested within a few seconds so can't have been anything serious)

All of these are on the form but I wasn't sure exactly how they'd get checked, so hopefully that will help someone in future.

Only thing the GP wasn't sure about was my sight without glasses - 6/36 and 6/24 - so I'm gonna give the MSA a shout to make sure I'm still ok to continue...

  172 Race Car
My medical cost me a few beers and the fuel to get to swansea. A doctor who races kit cars did it for me. My GP wanted £130 to do it. Im sure they got it wrong.

  Mk1 MX-5 (x3), Westy
Good price that! I don't mind paying the £30 as it's literally a few hundred yards away and that only works out at 57p a year ;)

I read that a lot of them are too busy to 'mess around' with this sort of thing so ask stupid prices in an attempt to put people off. Then if it goes ahead, happy days for them.

Good news on the medical then!

Will be keeping an eye on this to see how your first season of racing pans out extra. Not 100% sure, looked at the 2 mazda championships, but I kinda have my eye on the 750 Motor Club stock hatch series.

  172 Race Car
Classic stock hatch looks brilliant (AlexH does it) and you can get the cars ready to go for under £1k on pistonheads from time to time

£30 for a medical is a bargain mine was double that, was also quoted silly prices of £120+ from my GP! I've had the best fun in my mates MX5 on a track day, was rather jealous I didn't get to drive it home afterwards (I lie actualt because it needed a new set of tyres and brakes after we'd finished with it that day lol).

The MSA had my photo card lisence back to me within a week of sending the cheque and form off which I was pretty impressed with.

Cheers guys!

Was very kindly sent a free ticket/paddock pass and car parking pass for this weekend's races at Croft. I went up yesterday to have a nosy round. It was a brilliant day - a huge thank you to everyone who made me feel welcome. I have never felt so integrated into a group of people so quickly, plenty of friendly banter and chat!

Compared to everyone else in the paddock, I was amazed to such little spannering going on too - the only things I saw being done were tweaking a bonnet catch, fixing a rear light and putting some wheel nuts on (see pic below, haha).

Everyone set up, bit grey in the morning.

I should be getting car 25 (as seen above) in the next week or so.

Budget... trying not to think about that, haha. I don't really have one, I had a quick think a few weeks back but didn't go into much detail.

Having done that now (maybe a bit late? haha), it looks like a full first season (including buying a trailer, tow bar, race car, transponder (timing device), national B license, Max5 and BARC memberships, helmet, gloves, boots, overalls, 7 lots of entry fees, fuel (race and travel), consumables (oil, brake pads, discs, tyres - all of these last a season usually), transport, food) can be done realistically for under £12k I reckon (without bending the car). And of course you'll still have all your kit, car, and a trailer left afterwards! A full season after that should be no more than £5k all in I think.

Brilliant write up so far mate!

Rich and I will be doing our first race soon in Rich's E30 race car (Well, this year hopefully lol) and Im proper exited to get out there, will be following with interest!

No Mate, will be sorted out over the next 2 months, have had a few family issues which have been taking priority as of late.

(Thats if you meant me, not the OP lol)

Yeah Tony it has been a bit of a funny start to the year, but I have to get a few things sorted over the next few weeks then I can get it booked and done :)

Brilliant write up so far mate!

Cheers Russ - how far along are you at the moment?

ARDS passed this morning :)

To be honest the test is very simple, written bit slightly nervy but we got some good 'strong advice' from our instructor, Malcolm Barfoot (who is one of the founders of ARDS). These included 'All the flags are on the front of the form, each answer is only used once, tick them off as you go if you want...' and 'if unsure, just go for the most safety-conscious answer!'.

There are 17 flag questions and 8 multi choice (A-E). You need to get all the flags correct but you are permitted to get 2 of the 8 other questions wrong. The one that caught me out was about use of mirrors, I selected 'use them when changing direction or speed', but the correct answer is 'use them on each straight and wherever necessary'. The other 3 answers were obviously wrong!

The practical is pretty much 'Are you a hooligan? No. That's a pass then' affair. You get a couple of laps in the passenger seat to show you what's expected, then 3-4 laps getting used to the car (usually use one of the circuit's cars, in my case a Pug RCZ, which was alright but a bit 'numb' and had VERY light controls) with tips if you need them, and then 2-3 laps driving on your own with a silent instructor.

I did the test at Oulton (full) and it was a pretty quiet day, so not much traffic to worry about, didn't see a single flag and luckily the rain held off. Just kept it smooth, concentrate on lines and consistency, 80-85% maximum pace and passed with 'well above what is expected'.

So yeah, there we go. Not too scary! They are apparently making the test harder soon so anyone thinking about it, get stuck in!

Other news: HANS device and new gloves are on the way, window nets arrived this morning. Hopefully picking the car up within the next few days, and it'll be stickered up with number 28 :D

Would be nice to see double the numbers out on the grid. Did you see the karts on the Saturday? Mental!

Yeah, a few more would be good, but I am sure the series can grow with the right exposure. Haha, yep, it was like watching Mario Kart, they are quality!

Not a hugely exciting update, but I have a spare bit of time now so thought I would stick some words and pics up!

Here's a picture to break up the wall of text that is about to follow... haha.

cars.jpg

First up, the boring 'admin' side of things. I've now registered for Max5 with the help of Jon and Rodders, pretty easy really but I was being a mong! I also spoke with Nicola Bush at BARC and it turns out I can race as a guest of Max5 no problem, however it means I won't get any championship points - no worries there though. Just registered on the BARC website, which will allow me to pay for/fill out race entry online. Takes a few days to all go through apparently but should be plenty of time before Anglesey.

On the 'mechanical' side of things, I've done a few bits, namely: service brakes and rebleed all round, checked/tweaked the geo (front upper wishbones appear to be too long, so I can only get a maximum of 1.7 neg camber up front, but need to chat to Rodders about that), check/tweaked the corner weights (one of the spring platforms hasn't got a locking collar so it appears to have wound down about half a turn - marked that up with some tippex to see if it is moving), designed and ordered graphics, made and fitted camera, phone and GPS mounts (lap timer app), lubed the battery/fire extinguisher cables, sorted a wobbly high-vis rear light, fitted a Mong Mirror™ (you'll see, haha), fitted window nets, spanner checked the important bits and added some more padding to the cage in the driver's footwell.

So, there has been a fair bit of this in the mornings before work and also in the evenings afterwards... Luckily I have a very understanding fiancée, thank you Claire!

lift.jpg

Also noticed the crank pulley wobbling rather a lot. Gulp. Turns out the bolt was finger tight, and had been copper greased rather than threadlocked in, so I've ordered a new bolt. I had a quick look and the woodruff key and slot seem to be ok, so fingers firmly crossed it's not been like that for long... Once that's torqued up I think the car is ready to go!

I also said above I would do a running total. I don't really want to think about it, but here goes!

Car: £5k (I saw one go on eBay for £3500 the other week!)
Kit (second hand overalls, helmet, boots, gloves): £400
More gloves (others were too big): £75
Underwear (sadly not as flamboyant as Alan's): £75
Window nets: £70
HANS device and helmet clips: £430
Misc bits (diff oil, cage padding, brake fluid, grease, wiper blades, etc): £50
Max5 Membership: £75
ARDS Test: £250
Medical: £30
MSA License: £65 (ish)

I think that's it so far... A smidge over £6500.

Luckily I already had a trailer and tow bar (approx £1500-1750 if you don't have one) and suitable tow car or that would have bumped it up a bit! Other handy things I already had was stuff like jerry cans, jack, axle stands, pump, pressure gauge, tool set, oil filter wrench, which you could easily spend £500+ on if you buy decent stuff that'll last.

So, starting from scratch, you should budget about £9k to get all 'tooled up' I reckon (plus a car that's capable of towing ~£1400kg+ if you need one). For a competitive car and all the stuff you need, I reckon that's not bad value - and don't forget race cars hold their value extremely well too, so nearly all of that outlay could be recouped if needed.

Next up: Donington trackday on 30th May. Hoping for decent weather or I'll have a very miserable passenger for most of the day
laugh.png
Claire loves being strapped into the other seat (will have to fit one actually! haha) but I'm going to have to be harsh and try and get at least a couple of stints with just me in the car I think...

You're not wrong there :D That makes the DVD about £49.80 then, well worth the money...
