Maximum power possible for a 172

Hi Again
I was curious what sort of modifications I could make to the little van in order to transform it into a SUPER SLEEPER!
Ive seen a few 197's with megane engines dropped in to them but I was curious what could be achieved with what I have and what other mods would be required to take full advantage of the power gains.
In case anyone hasnt seen the kangoo spec, here is the listing http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230950292156?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 Cheers Guys

ITBs

Turbo

RS2 & Cams

They are your main choices. Have a search been covered a few times.

I think a turbo will be ok upto 280bhp on stock internals, people who have done it will have more info.

The only (half sensible) option is boost. You could spend a few grand on this, or a trillion dollars for the same gains with NA tuning.

If you really want to go chasing numbers with an f4r I believe scoff and his 740bhp is the benchmark

Holy***T is there a thread? Ive seen threads with megane engines with 300+ and thought this was because anything over 300 was difficult with a 172!

  53 Clio's & counting
Easiest route i'd say (if you're after outright power) is better rods and pistons in your current block, and a medium sized turbo hanging off the back - with a decent ecu and map you should be around 300 bhp

Mine is only pretty modest but IMHO is specced very well to be driveable on track etc, its around the 300bhp mark and a little more than that in torque:

The silver car I was following for a bit was Mike from MWM in his throttle bodies and 438 cammed clio, I stayed behind him for a while so his dad could get a look at his car as his dad was in my passenger seat. It went ok although obviously nothing like mine.

Our other clio is an RS2 and 197 cams setup, similar power to a basic bodies conversion but a bit more civilised so ideal for a road car.

Thats awesome mate, what does something like that cost to put together? Can't imagine a van racing round the track lol..

The devil is in the detail, you could have the same power far more cheaply but no diff etc and not as well built for reliability.

I think to start with a standard 172 engine and get it to where mine is you would need to budget around 8K if you are paying labour and maybe 6K if you do everything yourself like I do in terms of engine building and mapping etc.

Paul@RSTuning is currently aiming for 900bhp with his F4RT block.

Unless you are competitively drag racing I cant really see much point in that sort of thing as you simply cant use it other than with massive drag slicks if its fwd so no use on the road etc, but an interesting exercise none the less.

I think the engine has been rebuilt.. Think I read in the build thread.. Shame to do it all again if it has..

Maybe keep van and start from scratch

First thing you need to think about before blowing a years disposable income (for most folks) is what you are actually going to use it for.

If its "to surprise people at how quick my van is" I think you will find the amount of times you get to do that, versus the cost you spend, is probably going to leave you feelign like you have wasted your money.

I built mine for trackdays and I do a lot of trackdays in it, hence get a lot of fun from it.

Thats a very good point, maybe I should go see some track days for a laugh and see what I think before blowing the bank :)

This latest rebuilt box im runnig now has been in for only a couple thousand miles so far although quite a lot of them on track and hence fairly hard miles.

I am not going to be surprised if it dies though I got through 8 boxes in a couple of years on my mk1 and some of those were 172 boxes. Think that was more the revs killing them than the power though, porkies done a couple in his as well which is also n/a (ie hardy any power 212 iirc from when I mapped it) and I attribute that to rpm killing them.

Whats the cheapest route onto the track, might be best to try before spending big money?

Spring action day at come, 40 quid for a session IIRC (cheaper if booked in advance)

turn up, buy ticket, drive round track for 10 mins, go home.

Looks like civics are the way to go for drag racing..

Yes honda engines are extremely good, far better than the F4R, and more importantly far better supported for parts to modify with and for strong gearboxes.

Best combination IMHO would be mk1 clio with a turbo honda engine in it, hence my impending project, lol

Where do I subscribe?

The Renault scene is streets behind anyone else, this is half the problem. Its all about handling rather than power. Scoff has proved the F4r has some real potential and proved it years ago.
