Maxtor Basics - 500GB

Just bought a 'Maxtor Basics - Personal Storage 3200 - 500GB' hard drive

I got it home and my Samsung DVD Recorder says that it is not a compatible usb and it does'nt even show up on the ps3.

I think it might be something to do with the 'File system'. Usb stick is 'FAT' and works fine but the maxtor is 'NTFS'.

Anything i can do to solve this?

yes, format the drive to fat32.

you cant just format the drive to fat32. Windows will only let you do it to NTFS and i don't know whether i would trust some free program to do something with my nice new hard drive

Windows used to let you format as FAT32, what's changed?

on 98 they do but they dont anymore on xp. i have decided to just live with it cant be arsed to change it its too complicated.

i got a usb enclosure with a lappy hd in and i can format that to FAT32 in xp pro
