May have wasted my money !!

I had some Infinity comps in the front of my car but they mysteriously started to distort. I demonstrated to a couple of people and they said yep, definitaly blown. Ive just bought some brand new JBLs, put them in this weekend and they sound just as bad. What is going on, have I just wasted my time and money ? Luckily I havent binned the Infinitys and may be able to sell them. What is up with my HU to make the speakers sound so sh*te ??

Mnay thanks.

Ummm... Doesnt sound good!

Assuming you are running your Comps off the head unit directly, it sounds like your head unit is down on power. A bit wierd though, as I have never heard of a Head unit losing part of its power!?!?

Nothing to do with the settings? I had an all singing all dancing Kenwood with so many options and you could have recomended settings for different types of speakers (some sort of internal crossover)?

Probably no help at all! But hey, nevermind!

Or as the guys have said you could have one side out of phase! Do you have a amp meter? I have one if you need to borrow one!

yeah check the wiring too see if theyre connected properly as thats the oonly thing i can think of. Im also interested in your infinity comps if they are the 50.5cs so let us know.

Sounds like it could be a problems with either the amp or the hu. I know someone on here that had a problem with an Alpine head unit that suddenly stopped fading front to rear and went v quiet and distorted.

They are wired up exactly as they were. The Infinitys have been excellent until now, all of a sudden they started to distort if you pushed them a bit. Doesnt sound like a wiring problem as they were fine. The only thing I havent done yet is change the crossovers. I used the infinty ones [I was just too eager to get the JBLs in and only had an hour or so]. Will see if the JBL x over makes a difference. Otherwise its the HU. Its the all singing all dancing Sony flip front, dont know the model, I know Sony are supposed to be sh*te but I got it free off my mate when he sold his car so couldnt say no !

The Infinitys are 50.5s Im sure. Will put a post up when I decide which to keep. Also have a stealth shelf with some Phillips 6x9s that I dont use. The 6x9s sound really good but I have a sub now.

Thanks again !

sounds like the HU - can you borrow an amp off any one? if so try them off that.

It may sound silly - but have you check to see if the door cards are secure - ive heard people complaining about the speakers - and its been door card ratteling!!!

Have you tried linking the fronts to the back output on the HU - incase its only the front channels

No its not the door cards, it sounds much worse than that. Some of the time if you turn it down and up again its not so bad, but still sh1t. Will try the other channels. Have got an amp I could try, just need a whole day without rain so I can do it properly.

If both sets of speakers are fine, what would you keep ??

Sounds to me like your comps are earthing m8 - i read a story about someone pushing large amounts of power from an amp -> comps using standard OEM speaker cables. As a result parts of the speaker cable melted and left the wire exposed. The result was the wire earthing on the car doors - creating static in the sounds (alot like what you are hearing)

Just a thought, best checking your cables. Im running 200RMS into my Momo Polks and they seem to happy running through standard cables (i couldnt get the wires through the doors so decided to use the standard stuff)

Have a look, just a thought.

Im running off the HU though, not enough to melt speaker wire I wouldnt have thought. I think Im just going to have to pull it all out and re-wire it to make sure.

Sorry mate, think I missed the point there, Ill check to see if they are earthing anywhere. Best bet is to rip it out and put it back in I think.

What ones do you recommend keeping though ??

Yeah even tho your just running from the HU - there could a split or a bit of wire exposed still. Make sure all the spades are secure / correctly fitted to the speakers also.
JBL & Infinity are the same company - both as good/bad as each other if you ask me.
If by taking the whole system out - checking all the cables you still have no joy in resolving your problem, get over to http://www.caraudiodiret.comwww.caraudiodiret.com these people really know there stuff. Im more then sure someone will have come across the same issue at some point. There a good bunch.

Ok thanks mate, fingers crossed its going to be dry for the weekend, cant stand listening to all the rattles in my car without a stereo !!

The Infinitys are 50.1s not 50.5s I was wrong, Im guessing theyre not as good ?

As for theinfinitys...dont think there are such things ... are they 5 1/4 sized? i.e. do they fit inside standard housing??

think the 50.1 are no longer made any more! theyre 2 way 50watt speakers..the new 50.5 are slightly better

Not fitted it yet fella.

Mike - when i heard your comps that night - they truely did sound like they had blown, not just the tweets but i think your mids had gone too. have you tried just wiring your tweets upto the cross overs on there own, with out the outputs to the mids. Cuz it maybe the mids that are causing your issues.

Not tried any re-wiring yet mate, just replaced old with new which is what I thought the prob was but the new JBLs sound just as bad, you dont have to put it up half way and they start distorting. Ill have a look this weekend and see whats what. Will try the other channels too.

If you need a hand fitting that de-cat give me a shout, shouldnt be hard at all [as long as your existing cat isnt rusted onto the downpipe] it made heeps of difference to mine so should make even more to yours !
