I've personally never used the sonus pads. But the menzerna pads (especially the compounding one) are quite firm pads. Not sure if you get enough heat with the g220 to make use of them properly.

i'm very pleased with my kestrel, have a look here to see what can be done with menzerna pad and polishes, and also my new serious performance pads and polishes :)

if you're looking to avoid spending too much, buy a machine on its own (that Kestrel's much cheaper than the Meguiars machine), and buy a couple of bottles of the 250ml Menzerna polishes (Intensive and Final Finish should do it); Machine Mart sell 6" orange compounding pads for about £5ea - they're actually much softer than either of the two Menzerna pads. don't understand why people spend a fortune on pads - they're just circles of foam!

because they aren't 'just' circles of foam - different makes vary in design depending what job they are for, and certain pad designs (3m waffle ones for example) are made that way to help dissipate heat away from the surafce of the panel being worked on. compounding pads are only used in extreme circumstances - thats why the menzerna ones are so stiff. polishing pads are softer because they provide less bite, as do finishing pads which are the softest

do they actually produce results that you can see differ though? (i don't know, but am dubious)

these, i suspect, are the same pads that MM sell: http://www.seriousperformance.co.uk/Products,90,toView_288.html

when SP first started selling them, they were over £8ea - they have halved their price now though by the looks of it. anyway, they're much softer than the Menz polishing pad and should be available on the High St, which helps avoid postage costs too. providing you're not doing multiple cars, the polish should last a good while, so it's only really pads that you need a supply of

even though this one and this one are is dearer than the equivilent ones from serious performance...
and MM don't appear to do a finishing pad either..

aren't kestrels rotary tho. As im a total novice, aren't orbitals better for beginers?

MM sell lots of different pads; it's just an alternative suggestion of a convenient source, free of postage costs :)))

i'd not use the 50mm thick pads though, as they're quite 'wobbly'

so because ive used a 50mm thick polishing pad properly so it does'nt 'wobble', thats funny?

Mikey, just read this.

Sonus pads are good for the DAs; I found them to be hard wearing and last well. Their cut is not as ferocious as the LLC/Menz and 3M products and therefore are good starters.

The Menz products are tip top. However, I do still have some of the easy to learn Meguirars products and you can take them off my hands for a tiny amount since they are basically collecting cobwebs! In fact call it a fiver since I owe you 5 from the tyre applicator.

Also, couple of issues with the G220. Personally I would go with the Kestrel. Nothing on the wave lengths regarding any issues with these.

Once you are setup, let me know and I'll book in a couple of hours to go through it with you at mine.

IMO, either or chap. I prefer the Sonus pads to most that I have tried (if I was still a newbie). They're hard wearing and give good cut for the price.

In all honesty, there is going to be very little difference between the Kestrel and DAS. Not heard anything bad about either. It's only the G220 which appear to have broken on a couple of occasions.

thought the DAS and the Kestrel were exactly the same but one didnt have "kestrel" on the side of it?

In that case, the Sonus pads fella. But be aware that you will also need spot pads and the relevant backing plate for that size of pad.

Spot pads from the same place usually Mikey, companies stock both full sized pads and the spot pads, along with the backing plates respectively.
