Metal Grinding Noise, Help?

  MINI FJCW
Afternoon!

Had a strange noise coming from my engine bay or so it seems while driving.

It basically sounds like a metal grinding noise, initially I thought it was something to do with the steering as once I'm driving and move the steering wheel it goes away but then comes back again almost immediately.

It seems to do it more when I pull off too.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be?

Dont think its a wheel bearing, I had one changed not too long ago, and that made more of a very loud noise, but not like a metal like noise.

So only makes the noise when driving? If so could it be your brake pads being worn to metal? Does the noise increase when braking?

  MINI FJCW
No its nothing to do with the braking I dont believe.

If im driving along at 30, a metal like noise will almost start groaning & if I sharply turn the steering wheel left or right it goes away, then it will continue onwards. Doesnt seem to happen at higher speeds at 60-70 onwards.

Fair enough if it doesn't make the noise when braking then it most likely isn't that, its just that a metal grinding noise can happen if the pads are gone and it will sound like its coming from the engine area. Might be worth just checking your pad levels to rule that out?

I take it your oil level etc are all good as well?

Yeah, checked oil & its at a good level.

Ive kind of ruled out its the steering rack as that was done about 18 months ago.

My bearing had collapsed and was grinding in the rear hub. Was not a pleasant noise, infact it was scary.

Just a thought, it doesnt happen when I break but only when moving.

Could it be that brake discs are worn & maybe warped causing the noise?

Only one way to find out and that's have a look. Also spin the wheel while its jacked up and see if the noise happens

Also you 100% sure its coming from the front?
