I am giving my 'wife to be' my 172. I don't use it much at all now and it's better than her car so she is going to have my car.

This leaves me with hers and I don't want it. The car is practical, reliable, cheap to run/insure etc but it's no 'fun'.

I will only need a car on a couple of rare occasions during the year so might not even buy one, but if I do, I one of the cars I considered was a MK I Clio.

The one below is pretty close to me, but I know nothing about the MK I. It looks clean enough overall and the seller has actually put up plenty of pictures.

Why not just save the money you would spend on the car/insurance/tax/mot and use the 172 when you need it. As like you said, it will only be the rare occasion.

Makes more sense to me than to have a second car sitting doing pretty much nothing most of the year

No one can prepare you for the problems some Mk1s can bring, its hit or miss.

It might one that will run and never need anything, or one that will p*ss you off every day with things needing fixing/replacing. They need quite a bit of looking after usually even in standard form, you have to consider they are 15+ years old now...

On the valver forum you do see some lasting forever going strong, and some with low miles but loads of problems. Prepare yourself for this, some parts are fragile but from what i've seen, getting parts is pretty easy. Saying this though, my 1.2 RL was bulletproof, did 140,000 hard miles without missing a beat until the fuel pump went.

Dont just look at the arches for rust, take a screwdriver and see how solid the bottom is. Check if sunroof is leaking, rust under the door/rear windows and so on.
