Mk1 172 insurance group

Nice one mate.

Thought it would be lower as my GTI-6 was group 16. The GTI badge normaly puts a few groups on.

As the 16v was only group 12 due to being named 16v.

Had a GTI-6 as a company car myself 2 years back, what a car! A truck took a fancy to more than i did! - Loved that car!

Loved mine too, but a Volvo to a liking to the side of mine. Worse than a truck a volvo!

What was easier to insure?

GTI-6 was a company car so i didnt insure it. I know the pug is cheaper though! - My Clio will happily run rings round the pug, pug was more fun especially in the wet! 167bhp and 15inch wheels dont dwell well together! - But on the right road on the right day it was fantastic!

Im sure there aint much in it, there is a massive difference in performance between a clio 172 Mk1 and a 306 GTI-6. 0-100, low 17s for the clio, compared to mid 20s for the pug.

Dont get me wrong for its time it was amazing, proper old school hot hatch! The only other cars around with six gears where porsches and Astons when it was released. you gotta hate the clutch though im sure my left leg is twice the size of my right still today!

I thought the clutch was fine? The first one i had in the 16v was heavy! Got used to it tho, now i prefer a stiffer clutch. Id like my next car to have 6 gears too, but that puts me back to another gti-6. Only had it for 4 months but ive still had one, best off getting something different.

One thing I have noticed with regards to insurance that different insurance companies class different cars in different group ratings.

e.g. Adrian Flux would not insure me on my 172 as I had no experience on hot hatch of that performance. They also said it was Group 17 on the hot hatch list??? I am now with Elephant who class it as group 16.

306 clutch cables were notorious for seizing up. Mine certainly was rough in my Xsi - might explain the heavy clutch comment above.
