Mk1 172 Oil temp gauge

The Oil Temp gauge in my RS-1 is quite erratic. It usually sits at 1/2 way where it should be, but on long motorway journeys, it flies around the bottom half of the dial.

It never goes above the 1/2 way mark, and ive recently had a service so the level isnt low etc.

anyone got any ideas?

The temperature gauge... next to your fuel gauge.

And before you ask, yes they do have fuel gauges ;)

Its a coolent temperature sensor not oil (I wish they had oil ones instead personally). its a common faling you need a new sensor I cannot remember how much they are but there not that bad to replace you can do it yourself. Many people who have this problem have it quite seriously and the engine stutters and pumps out black exhaust gases as there overfueling.

Does this sound about right edde?...

Nope thats the intake air temperature sensor.
The coolent temp one is on the radiator. If you thing of the radiator them on the passenger side at the top with the sensor pointing into the radiator from the back thats where it is.
