MK1 brake help

  1.8 8v RSi
right saturday night my brakes failed just outside my town. at 60ish....the brakes had been soundind strange for a lil while as if the discs were warpped. was booked in to have them done next thursday. garage says that i probably ran out of brake fluid n have a split in the brake lines somewhere.(cant think how) my car hasnt moved from cark park for day i moved it today to another place and this almighty kinda low toned noise happened every time i moved the car and the car felt so stiff to move as if the brakes were on...
is this what the garage thinks it is? when i pulled up trying to brake the car felt as if it was pullin in one direction.
also where is the brake fluid thing in the RSi engine bay?

cheers
Si

Should be on the drivers side at the bulk head. 4 pipes come out this section and is a large metal silver object. Check the fluid there, but if there is fluid in the system the master cylinder may have failed.
