mk2 i72 power steering pump(techy help)

  307 hdi (powered by derv)
Good evening,
I'm currently in a dispute with my warrenty company. Basically the power steering pump is knocking and is louder than the engine. It still works and they will not pay out coz it hasn't broken down as such, they say it is wear and tear. Surely it isn't. Wear and tear would be tyres, pads (items which are in service guide).

How long should a power steering pump last? I'm only on 36k and this can't be wear and tear. I'm awaiting renault to ring me back and I just wanted to double check.

Mnay thanks
Shaw

Try another dealer or ring Renault Uk it should be covered under warently they should last almost forever.

thanks edde.
The policy is with rac and you would of thought they would be more helpful. I will try dealer again and see what there opinion is.

is it knocking when you get on full lock etc ? you could need the top strut mod done , the pipes tend to burst as well

no it knock's even when idling. They still aren't budging regarding paying out. I am having the car back and i will have to put up with the noise.

They say it is collapsed bearings. If this is left what is the worst will
happen? explode? make me lose control if it happens half way round corner?

you'll destroy the pump, and possibly if it seizes you'll take the aux belt out, which will shag a load of other things, i'd get it fixed, then argue with the company later about reclaiming the cost

speak to j3ned about parts, he's cheaper than anyone else for genuine Renault parts

This is a VERY common fault - basically the bearings on the pulley collapse causing the knocking noise you can hear. Eventually the pulley will sieze even though there is constant lubrication from your PAS fluid. Once the pulley seizes the auxilary belt may carry on spinning round the siezed pulley and set fire - it happened to me and nearly destroyed my car - i had to take a piss on it to put the flames out !!!! If it doesnt set on fire the pulley will shear off causing your auxilary belt to fly off and become entangled in the cam belt which will slip a few teeth and then bend all your valves

My advice is DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR !!!!!

A pump from me is £45 + vat .........£7 delivery

Aye just get it sorted from j3ned for that price, then reclaim it off them. Maybe j3ned can sort you a nice piece of headed papaer with the pump stating it is not wear and tear but instead a common fault with the 172 pump.

Cheers for your comments. I have paid the £58 to get the car back for the time being as i was stuck without a car. I'm about to write a letter to rac and i think i will add this thread as it is quiet scary.

The garage are charging £398 to replace the pump, seems very steep to me?

Is it something i can fit myself?

cheers Fred. I will give them a try if i don't get any luck from garages round here.

Just rang renault and they are quoting 250+vat for the part and then 200+vat for labour.

Going to try a few others on monday.

j3ned is it a genuine renault part from you? How do you manage to sell cheaper than renault. surely there mark up can't be that high.

J3ned works at a Breakers but he cna also get cheaper than liost parts from Renault.
I'm guessing the £45 one is one from a car being broken that what I'd get and get somone to fit it. Normal garages will charge less than 1/2 what Renault want.

I have took my car into another garage to get this pump done. But they have said the PAS pump is fine and it was the idley pulley which was loose. It was hanging on by a couple of threads. This has now made the noise tempermental. Anyone got any ideas? Could this still be the PAS pump.

They also noticed while it was in that the spring tensoiner near the belts had a broken eyelet on the top but they said that wouldn't be it as it makes the noise when staionary and the tensioner is still held firm in place by the rubber bung.

Christ, I'm glad that sorted. Anyone got any ideas to what the noise could still be. Its still being tempermental.

I have just done some research and it would make sense that the bearings in the idler pulley could have gone. Coz they have tightened it, it would make sense that it is being tempermental.

Does this sound about right?
