does it just unscrew? Because i cant seem to get it out.

Im in the process of doing this to mine too. Found I couldnt unscrew it as I think it has corroded inside over time. Look on ebay I have just bought a new base for it only cost me £5, now im looking around for a shorted aerial to go with it

Ye it is meant to unscrew I think. Mine wont budge even used a pair of plyers on it!
