Mobile speed detector A1 today.

Hello, did anyone else pass a mobile detector van in the hard shoudler on the A1 today before it becomes the A1(M).

Anyway, I did, and I was doing about 63-66mph. I think it was a 60, it was an A road, but there were no signs.... not even after I passed. And no warning of van. ANyway, that aside, u think I will get a ticket? what is this 10% + 2 thing??

I did check the local constabulary sites and they had no listing of the van operating there today, and say they should be yellow painted, so I think it might have been a tax disc reader thingy.

I was comming home from holiday btw and I dont normally speed at all, I sit at 33 max in a 30.

not to good with roads but if it is dual carrigeway the speedlimit is 70mph, if not the normal rule is 10% + 2 so 68 ish to be caught, thats what i got told anyway by a nice local officer

Even if it was a van you wouldnt get done if you were doing 66 (on your clock) in a 60. At 66 on the clock your prob doing 60 mph

Is that right that national speed limit on a dual carridgeway is 70? (even an A road) I thought it was 70 ONLY on motorways??

If you want to test this by the way find a motorway or dual carrigeway and find an articulated lorry on the flat. Pull up along side and do the same speed. They are limited to 56 mph, so you can tell the speed on your speedo. My clock reads 62 when i hold level with a truck (which i assume to be doing 56).

yep almost certain that dual carriagways are 70, unless there is signs stating otherwise

If there are no signs its 70 mph on dual carridgeway. However you can have limits as low as 30 mph on dual carridgeway. The A1 has 40 mph limits in a number of places that go through villages. Motorway is always 70mph unless temporary limits are in place.

i have got away with many many close calls, now its just not worth the risk

for the safety camera teams to be out they do not have to put speed camera signs up to warn you and they (the vans) do not need to be clearly visible, - these are the BIGGEST money spinners for the police

Please dont call them the "safety camera team" thats what they want to be known as.. truth is they the "stealth tax team" or "bunch of f**kwits team"

while I have no objections to some of the cameras, most of them are there clearly to earn money.

speed cameras are c**ts, i went through one at 85 today on the a1 on me way back, but im sure it didnt flash, there was a lorry at side of me too which might of blocked its vision or it had no film or whatever they work on. went down to peterbourough at quite a rate, hope i didnt get caught as i was getting a bit silly at time but i was rushing to pick up a beautiful lady

One of the lads at my work got done by one of these mobile units. 49 in a 40. Fekkin c**ts. The only saving gfrace really was that he did actually get caught in a built up area near a school etc but its still pisses you off dunnit.

As for relying on a 10% +2 rule that is there to make a conviction more secure as it allows for the maximum tolerence your speedo is likley to be out. Some speedos will be bang on (I think my 172 one is) but a peugeot I used to have was miles out like 80 actual MPH (read from a GPS unit) was nearly 100 on the clock. What king.stromba suggested is a good idea to check your speed, try it with an unladen lorry if you can as that will definately be doing the max speed.

Manufacturers would be very unwise to allow the speedo to read lower than actual speed. There would be law suits everywhere. I reakon you can pretty much guarantee that if your speedo is out it will be calibrated to read a faster speed rather than a slower one (when compared to road speed). When i used to work for AVIS delivering cars i nerver came across a speedo on a new car that was calibrated to read a slower speed than the actual road speed. I cant comment on older cars, but the new (2000 onwards) ones seem to be mainly reading too fast a speed.

Heres another thought. If the speedos are out what about the millage clocks. May not be that inaccurate over a short run, but over over the lifetime of the car, it may be a huge difference. If you had a clock that was 20 % out, at 100,000 you may have done 80 or 120 odd thousand miles. How do these little beasts measure distance? Would changing wheel size alter their reading?

Also whats that stuff like that you spray on your number plate to prevent cameras taking pics? Someone told me cling film on the plate works? Any truth in these methods?

Oh yes and also, just like to say that the A1(M), has to be the best bit of motorway ive ever used. Why dont the government get there fat lazy asses down there and realise that 4 lane motorways reduce congestion and make them all 4 lane. 4 lanes prevents the lorry overtaking lorry with slow grandad creeping past both holding up 40 cars scenario.
