By all means fit a silicone elbow www.hillpower.co.uk it all helps 
and remove all your original air feeds down behind the headlamp/front bumper and fit a direct air feed hose direct to your airbox then drill the bottom part of your air box sorted!

Silicone elbow just looks good, think more of the experianced lads will give you the technical info on the pro's and con's of them. I'm modding my airbox this weekend, picked one up on ebay and a new front lower grille to have a mess around and see what i can do. That way if all goes wrong then i can revert back to the original parts.
Think some people just re-pipe the inlet to the front grille, or run a seperate pipe from the grille into the small area behind the right headlight... again i'm not to sure as i'm new to this also! Thinking of getting a larger bord pipe and taking it straight from the airbox to the front grille on mine, need to machine/cut a larger hole in the airbox first. Getting one of the lads in our workshop to machine a nice aluminium bracket to fit into the hole and secure the pipe to it

I don't get the drilling part too? If you direct feed the airbox to the front then that should be plenty of cold air for the job. On ebay an airbox can be between £25-£45 i guess? Got mine for £35 inc. P&P.

its just something i have done to mine, i have encased i k&n ik in my lower part of the oe box, then covered the top in sheet alloy, piped in a air feed to my fron grill and drilled the air box so the filter was not starved of air where it sat.
