MPG problems? change your lambda....

  clio 182
For all those wanting to know whet sensor to change, its the pre cat sensor. The one before the cat, between the cat and manifold as stated in op.

Yes my I get better mpg out of my 182 than I did my old 1.4 Ibiza, again like Fred said it's due the fact that it's scrap engine and the fact you got to rag the tits off it to get it any where.

Yes its uk miles, to the guy going on about uk/us??? Coz miles is the same anywhere in the world but surely if ur on about km's then it'll kpg u need to work out. Do a search on here or google to work out your mpg/kpg as you'll find you'll get the same readings as every1.

Please people don't keep going on about mpg n how much we all get n how we can get better as their are hundreds of threads on here about this and I don't want this one to get closed. Talk about the problems and how I sorted it. Any1 getting poor mpg while driving like a granny I think should get there pre cat lambda changed.

Couple of people said can you check them? If you can get under the car n unscrew them yes but the mechanic who changed mine said you can't really tell if they are gone or not as the sensor is inside. Well worth just changing tho as I thinknit helps the car run smoother too. Not tryed a cold start up yet but am guessing they will b better too.

Hmm I wonder if this is what's happening in my 197 used to see 29 combined now on 25... same sort of driving . What sort of figure should i be getting at 65?

US and UK gallons are different.

Well I just did the 65mph test and reset and after 20 mins of cruise control at 65 I averaged 41mpg on crap fuel so seems ok.

Just seems odd that even driving like a granny I'm averaging 26.

was the wind blowing when you had the test? this can be a major factor

duno i was in the car with the windows up lol.

way back i got 39, so does seem a bit low really. i used to get 45, not sure if the warmer weather had anything to do with it, it was -5 when i did the test today.

I was about 37 mpg @ 65mph. should I consider a new lambda or ... engine warms up as it should, and it revs to 7250 when warm, so CTS and thermostat should be ok

Think I'm just gona do a big service Inc lambda as soon as we get some nice weather and a day off work in a few months. I can cope for now lol. And I also recon I'll buy a new decat as I'm sure my average mpg was about 4 higher with that on. But I need to do it after the cold weather so I'm not sat defrosting the car with a stupidly loud car at 6am lol

Yeah easy peasy. I was going to do a guide for here but forgot... basically.

22mm spanner and a strong arm cause the old one is usually a b**ch to get off.

Car on jack stands or ramps.
In the center of the car just before the cat you'll see the sensor sticking into the exhaust.
Loosen sensor.
Tthe wire clips onto the subrame in a little metal thing, undo that (its obvious when you're looking at it) and then undo the connector (fiddly).
Unscrew old sensor.

The new sensor should have copper slip on it already, if not, put some on.
Screw in and tighten up.
Connect it back up (fiddly as hell cause you can't get both hands on it when using ramps & lying on the floor)
Clip it back onto the subframe.

Mine was f**ked and causing really bad idle issues, misfires and popping. 15 mins later.... perfect smooth idle back again.

Edit: There is something that the RTE that did my diagnostics said to do after which I never did: "Get the parameters reset" or something like that. Fred etc, what is that and is it important?

when you had changed yours, what mileage did you have on the clock? I've read somewhere that they should last about 100k. I'm on 56k right now so wondering if they give up earlier often or not

that's what I've read on a car parts website. I don't know, maybe renault recommends 50k like you said :S

As far as I know, and I may be wrong, they are not really a service part with a scheduled replacement mileage... but, they are a very common thing to go wrong.

Mine went at 91k... but, the one I took out wasn't a genuine Renault one... it looked completely different. So, it must have been changed at some point by a previous owner as well.

No I got it from a local Motor Factor (AF Glaze, Dixon St) where I know i will be given a genuine part...

I bought a coil off Ebay a while ago and when it came it was not a genuine part... the printing on the box looked like it had been done on a dot matrix printer! there are so many counterfeit parts out there, I prefer to buy from a reputable supplier...

I found a bosch lambda on ebay, 60 quid plus 30 for transport. will ask renault for their price and if the diff is noticeable I'll take a chance on ebay

do you have motor factors that supply Bosch parts in Bucharest? if so maybe worth asking if they can get you one in on a stock order... I can give you the Bosch part number.

Thanks Blambert.

I wonder whether it's worth changing anyway as my MPG does seem to have mystically dropped a lot recently.
