My 197 test drive...

  Cup 172
Car look loads better in the flesh than in pictures. The vents behind the front wheels are a nice touch. they hadn't fitted the front splitter to this one, which would probably have improved it further.

Interior feels much better than mine. The steering wheel is perfect and has a nice red centre line stitched into it. The seats are nice and hold you in place well. Driving position is a different class to mine. Quality is much better and it feels a lot more modern. Some nice details like the Renault Sport logo on the clocks.

Setting off and the clutch is more progressive than mine. The gearbox really is good. Changes are precise and positive. 6 speeds definitely help.

Engine sounded great at low revs. Nice hard edged snarl. Put my foot down for the first time and.... gutted. felt much less urgent than mine. No big kick at 5000 revs. Probably not much slower but much more refined so felt slower. Engine only had a few hundred miles on so will improve, but still disappointed. Felt really really flat. Didn't sound as good at high revs either. Overtaking on some A roads and definitely not as good as mine at flooring it and getting past stuff. Much quieter at speed though. Got up to about 100 and felt stable and comfy.

Onto some back roads.... Car is much more stable than mine under hard braking. Mine tends to follow the roads more. Through the corners, again, the car is more planted. Not as much information through the steering wheel and seat, but still good. Less roll than the Cup. Steering weights up, but felt a little slow to me. Coming out of the corners, the car puts its power down well, with much less torque steer. Although good it left me a bit cold to be honest. Probably quick point to point, but none of the drama of the cup. Felt a bit sterile. Not as good as Id hoped.

Round town, it was very docile and easy to drive.

One thing I did notice though.... Not a single person looked at the car. Got back in the freshly waxed cup and noticed that it turns more heads.

So... good car, but maybe a bit bland both in looks and driving. I personally think their are much better places to put 16k.

Maybe a Cup version will improve it.

Sounds like a well rounded opinion.

I just want to line one up against a 172/182 and see how it performs head-2-head.

would you guys sacrafice the speed and feel on this model for Nissan type build quality, or would you take the poor build, but faster more fun approach to motoring again? just interested...

Yeah, good review mate!

So far we've had two Cup owners review it. Personally i think if you drove a 172 you would notice the performance deficit so ozzy says, we need a slow ass 172 owner in there really!

Yeah probably the fairest all round review I've read so far. Don't think I'll be trading in the 182 anytime soon though!

Good write up. I stopped by my local dealer to have a look at their new one and agree that they definately look a lot nicer in the flesh rather than on pictures.

Didn't ask about test drives though as I would get the Megane over the clio TBH.

  MINI JCW
i think the review goes along with the general consensus that the 197 is better made, more refined, more comfortable but doesnt feel as fast and isnt as much fun as the 172/182

Defo agree with your thoughts. There is no go when you put your foot down. This is definatley because of the electronic accelerator.:dapprove:

Eh? I'm simply said i'd like to see some performance comparisons against 172/182 both around a track and on a drag, to see if the fact they don't feel as fast is because they are in fact not as fact.

Had a blast in one yesterday guys funnily enough... One word to sum it up.....
Disappointing!!!
My friend (Who owns a Clio Trophy) and I went to see the one they have in the show room in Dixon Renault Lincoln.. Got there and noticed they also have one on demo parked outside.. That and the fact that we both know the salesman that's running it, thought it'd be a shame not to take her out.. lol
Anyway, both swapped over and had about a 20 mile drive each and just left the dealership sooooo disappointed!!! Getting back in my mates Trophy was such a step up in driving experience.. I drove his Trophy back and it was just sooo much better IMHO.
In the 197's deffence, we were 3 up and it only had 190 miles on it, so I will reserve total judgement until I drive a 'run in' example on my own. But it felt slouchy, had little or no torque below 5,000 rpm (and even then, there wasn't the kick that you get in the 182) and felt very unresponsive.. Just seem to make alot of noise and didn't seem to go anywhere.. Especially from 80+ in 4th/5th..
The handling wasn't a patch on the Trophy, slightly wallowy (spelling ) for some reason and i'm not totally into the looks yet either.. As soon as they bring out a Cup/Trophy version, with darker rims, spoiler etc it'll look spot on, but at min I think it just looks a bit subtle IMO.. Do like the vents in the arches though..
On the plus side.. The interior is alot better than previous Clios.. Seats hold you in very well (obviously not as nice as the Recaros ). and the general driving position is alot better and isn't Bus driver like compared with the previous Clio.. Brakes were very impressive on feel, although I hardly gave them a great deal of hammer..
But on the whole I expected a lot more really.. But as I say, i'll give one (that's got a few thousand miles on it) another go and reserve full judgement till then..

Sounds like you need a Cup variant of the 197....Many positives from your test drive, which i'm happy to hear, but the feedback we are getting from most is the lack of urgency on the cars part to get shifting when the Go faster pedal is planted!

Sounds like they've turned it into a Civic Type R, except without the VTEC kick, and the reliability.

What do you mean by a Cup variant though. A lighter, more powerful or stiffened 197 still might not make it handle well or be overly exciting.

The problem which seems to stand out is the steering. Would Renault remove electric power steering just for us...i'm not sure.

Dont get me wrong, it does handle well, just not as involving as Id have liked. If they lightened and stiffened it, it would make it more involving?

From a feedback perspective it wouldn't make any difference would it...it would be just like a Civic Type R.

Why not? Surely a stiffer car will give more feedback?

Less of the road will be filetred out through the suspension and more fed back to the driver?

has anyone actually managed to get a side by side comparison with a 182/172 yet to see for certain how it performs? if it's as quick then technically Reno have pleased your every wish almost, as it would be fast, better handling?, comfier, better driving position, safer and most importantly more reliable, with a better quality of build.

All except for one.... fun. The thing that makes you want to take the long way home...

Not side by side mate.. But got out of the 197, straight into a 182 Trophy and drove that.. Totally better drive and felt a fair bit quicker too.. But the 197 would of been tight as a nuns... Even so, I personnaly don't think it'll be any quicker than the 182 at all.. And that's from a totally unbiased sideline as I don't have either.. Saying that, i'm getting a 182 on wed for a few weeks whilst my LCR's in the Bodyshop.. Better than the bloody Volvo i've got at the min.. So i'll be giving that a nice bit of welly for a while... LOL
