My Boot Build (Spare Wheel Well)

Bought the car with a monster of a boxed sub, decided i needed some space and when i took the box out i couldnt believe how heavy it was, decided to take the spare wheel out too, car seemed to pull alot better without the excess weight.
Chose to sink the sub into the spare wheel well, don't know alot about how to get the best out of the sub but it to me doesnt sound any worse then it did with the monster box.
After a grille now to protect the sub from my mums shopping!

forgot to get any pics of it in progress i'm affraid, but it was suprisingly easy

i cheated and used the front of the box as i didnt want to cut out a hole and get it wrong, then i fixed bits of mdf underneath to take the weight of the sub and stop it sliding, and to stop the spare wheel bolt away from the magnet of the sub

then i used bits of cardboard as a template and cut mdf to fill in any gaps and get the false floor completely level

used fitted the original carpet used a stanley knife to cut out the hole, stuffed it with sound deading stuff, wacked the sub back in and done!

Much better!

I really cant understand people who have things like in the first pic in their car!

me neither mate, don't care about how to get the sub sounding perfect just a nice bit of bass to complement my components, think it looks quite tidy now, really easy job too

looks much better mate. im hopefully doing this soon. any difference in sound??

to be honest mate, im no audio expert but to me it sounds no different, just make sure your false floor is a good fit, or have batons to stop it sliding about

if i hadnt cheated and hacked up the box, easiest thing to do would be use the carpet as a template, i'm sure others on here have made a better version of mine, but this took me about an hour, probobly would be less if my drill hadnt ran out of battery

I might do this :) thanks for the inspiration. Would take a bit more doing for me though with a 15" sub.

mines a 15" too mate, just make sure you have batons or something to take the weight of the sub and one the legth of the wheel well to stop the floor sliding back and forth

It looks dwarfed in those pics:eek: Mine looks mahooosive compared to that.
The problem I have atm is that my sub box is so heavy that it makes the boot floor dip in the middle. I think Im going to keep the spare wheel and get rid of the foam that the jack sits in and put the sub in there.

i took the car out for a drive yesterday without sub or spare wheel and it felt so much nicer, your sub sounds like a monster lol

b&q do a sheet of mdf think it was 18mm for just under £10, if i were you i'd ditch your box and spare and use that, cut out the hole, use the excess as batons for the weight and your done

  Low 'n' Slow
i'm gonna do something similar with mine soon. I'm gonna have a cover over the sub though so i can still put stuff in my boot

gonna get myself a grille to cover it, take my mum shopping so it needs protection, better then having bags on back seat though :)

cheers mate,
amp is underneath the passenger seat, its well out the way of feet aswell, and mounted just out far enough to change the gain settings, keeps it nice and cool too.

tidied up the carpet a bit today so it sits underneath that bar thingy on the seat backs and stuffed the wheel well with abit more foamy stuff, cant really notice a change in sound from the box to be honest

Ive been thinking this through and I think I am going to cut the front of my sub box off and put in inside the spare wheel well, cut a hole in the floor and slot the sub through. Im then going to mount the amp on the parcel shelf :)

but if you do this you'l need to cut off the bolt that the spare wheel and tool kit screw on to
i've left mine in and offset the sub, so it isnt dead in the middle, more in the top right corner of the boot, more space too.

simplest way to do it is get a sheet of mdf, we sell them at work for about a tenner perfect size for the boot, use your sub box as a template and cut out the hole

as for the amp on parcel shelf, are you going to put it on top or hanging underneath? personally i wouldnt want to show off my ice, and you'd have to be carefull about lifting your boot up and down as it'l make the cables move and cause loose connections

I mashed up my sub box and made it fit, I didnt even need to get rid of the pin or the spare wheel. The boot is approximately inches higher but it is functional. Even though the false floor is on it the sound is still good so its win win.

Pic here(excuse the colour of the sub I was going for a gold theme with the whole car but Ive decided to go black, now you cant even see it Im not going to bother painting it.):

Sorry to bring up an OLD thread, but I want to do this to my car too and wondered if you had any pics of this? Or any advice and tips would be useful! Thanks!
