my car PC...

Looks impressive ! I was going to ask the same question as hip_spasm, why would you need a PC in your car ? Music is a good reason but isnt it the same as burning your MP3s onto a CD and playing them thru a MP3 headunit ?

Fair play tho, something different !

mainly for the sat nav. Also have this cool ODB2 reader which tells you 0-60 times, etc etc
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I see ! All becomes clear ! Very nice mate ! Sounds the business ! Easy to do ?

What PSU you got?

I imported one which started up/shutdown on igntion etc.. didnt reset on engine start (from ignition).. quite cool.

When I pulled key out, XP used to hibernate.. heh..

  Scenic mk1 (F3R)

im thinkin of fitting a shuttle to mine or mod my xbox duno yet either way its gona be linux that ill be runnin

Problem with Linux on them, is there isnt really a decent Sat Nav package.. InfoMap apparently runs on it (using QT toolkit) but Ive yet to see evidence - people say the setup is on the CDs.. I couldnt find it when I had it!

you can port windows programs to linux but i can see it being very buggy.. my whole pc install cost about £400

If anyone wants one of these systems from a guy whos very knowledgable about this stuff give John a ring on 07740835852 or mailto:j.greaves@sr-limited.co.uk">j.greaves@sr-limited.co.uk. He runs a company called safer roads limited.

He sells a computer which runs of 12v which solves the power issues. Its also extremly quite.

I have a touchscreen and pc i bought of this guy and its excellent. Very small and does everything although im still looking for a copy of autoroute express 2003 if anyone has one? The software im useing now is a bit old

Heres the pc hidden under the glovebox-you can just see the power buttom

Heres the glovebox with an external dvd player and usb adaptor

Value for money is excellent. I mean its easy to go out and spend £200 on a headunit £100 on a changer then start thinking about screens for dvds navigation when youve done you wont have spent less then £1000-no way could easily be double even triple+.

I got the computer and touchscreen for £525. I then spent £20 an a dvd drive and £40 on usb pendrive for swapping data quickly and easily. The comp came with a wireless network but although it sounds good to be honest its just hassle and the usb pen drive and dvd drive atleast for me works far better. I run the sound through my headunit with an aux in but could easily use an amp if i didnt have the headunit.

Trying now to find a suitable keyboard to build into the sunvisor i found at a scrappy the other day-anyone got any suggestions?

1.6 16v, dont need a keyboard..

Just run "On Screen Keyboard" in Accessibility Tools..

As for Windows programs to Linux - you can run them in Wine, but they are so buggy they are unusable.. not worth it.

i do use an onscreen keyboard but its a bit slow when you have fat fingers
Get a PDA stylus? I had one.. very cool.. people found it easier to use.

Look on ebay.. sure someone has some for sale - I used an IBM Workpad Stylus with mine.. hehe.

GPSdrive
... is useless.

You have to go on the map to certain points and add waypoints (from what I read - before, It couldnt even do any navigation).

Sat Nav, to me.. needs to be able to take a postcode/street name.. and take me there in the quickest route possible - you cant do that with any software on Linux apart from, supposedly, Infomap.

Its because there is no commecial support for Linux programs.. and you cant make a navigation program without funding..

HOW MUCH MONEY ARE YOU LOOKING AT TO GET A PC AND SCREEN TO PUT IN YOUR CAR???? LIKE THE IDEA, ESPECIALLY PRO1S 0-60 TIME READER

I think I paid £193 for the Cube then had to buy the HDD, RAM, DVD Drive.

I reckon I spent about £800 - £900 for everything.. but then, that includes a £170 PSU, £300 Screen etc..

Theres enough people doing this out there that you can do it very cheaply these days, many websites will provide details of how to build youre own power supply that will shut down automatically for you and various other useful tips.

Well, the PSU I had was cool - sold it now tho.

Fully regulated, didnt reset when engine started due to voltage drop, full shutdown controlled etc.. would recommend it to anyone.

Its fine - as long as you dont want navigation!

From their site:

Q: Why is there no street navigation which gives turn by turn
directions?

A: Turn by turn directions are not possible with GpsDrive at the present
because no opensource data is available which represents the street
coordinates in a form usable for that purpose. GpsDrive currently
works with bitmap images rather than vector data.

Hardly great for Street Navigation..
