My car sounds ropey at idle...

  MK1 Mexico, Clio 172
.. any idea's? At first i thought it sounded Tapetty but it's not it's chug chug chug with a bit of squeek (bit diesel engine rattly). Once you're off it's fine. (Difficult explaining a sound) It had a cambelt change about 10k ago, wondering if it's the other belt i read about that you should have changed at the same time. I've only owned it a week.

I'm taking it to the garage next weekend

Dephaser pulley. Very common, unfortunately.

Cambelt/Accessory belt off to do the replacement, too. ~£600.

It's only audible at idle, like you say. Once you get oil pressure up, it stops.

I had my 2 belts done and dephaser pulley done for £370 by a Renault Spesialist in Glasgow. Shop around.

More like £350 because you dont need the kits jsut the belts and i think the price of the dephaser has gone up from £140
id say a few hundred quid should sort it

Cheers everyone, the car is going to Mark Fish next weekend for a once over, hopefully he can do this for me. After reading the post in another section where the poor fella spent £1200 with a garage in Newcastle and the engine went bang, i'm happy to pay a bit more at someone recommended

the depehaser wont fail though imo it will just get louder so dont worry about it being too urgent :)

Yep, replacement of both belts is a must, even if they're only a year or so old.

I'd even replace the tensioner and idler, whilst you're there. Best to be safe, after all.
