My clio mk1 versus a civic type r

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Just found this old video in my photobucket and thought a few people might enjoy.
Back when it was basically standard other than losing some weight.

Picture from the outside from the same lap as the video:

Quite suprising really how well they carry on gripping considering the amount they lean over, lol

Nice vid. The clio stalks it's prey! The roll suprises me too in our 182 FF but it seems to work and work well so I'm not gonna argue!

Very nice, cant beat a williams!

Was just a valver 1.8, the previous owner put williams stickers on, lol

I have since fitted a williams engine and widetracked it though, so its much more like one now than it was in that video, well in fact it is one other than the chassis number really.

Since I have widetracked it and fitted better suspension it doesnt lean as much anymore, but will still just about pick a rear wheel up if you really try hard on sticky tyres.
Its easy to see why they like a bit of negative camber when you see how much bodyroll they have!

youve gotta love combe

Yeah I really like the circuit even though its not massively technical.

Am there again this weekend but will be in my corsa:

Fair bit more power than the 172 or the williams engines in our clios but nowhere near as good through the bends.

Take it that's a C20XE?

Do you not find it quite front end heavy compared to the likes of the clio's?

It is a cammed XE on bike throttle bodies. Cracking engine considering its just a snotty old standard engine that we machined cuts into the standard pistons for the bigger cams.

Yes it feels much more nose heavy than the clios, and just doesnt offer the same sort of confidence when you are cornering, more understeer initially and then when it brakes away it goes into more oversteer too, its not something I would normally choose over a clio for track use but I bought it as a backup staff car for Total Vauxhall magazine, where I couldnt really have a clio, LOL

That said, the engine and box is just SO much better than the F4R though, so its not without its plus points :) Even this worn out smokey old lump with a set of cams lobbed at it will outperform all but a very expensive F4R build!

I'd have to agree on the engine front but I don't think I'd choose one over a clio as a track weapon though.

Got a major soft spot for XE'd Corsa B's. I really want one in white with anthracite Corsa C Excluse wheels or Cav Turbo/GSi wheels.

cool vid
i will look out for the corsa on sat, had one as my first car always wanted to xe it but got a 172 as it was easier lol

172 is a better basis for a trackday car really, Ive done quite a lot to my corsa suspension wise, gaz coilovers, altered the tie bars to introduce more caster, uprated ARB etc, and it still isnt a match in the bends for our 172 on a set of eibachs and cup dampers.

Yeah the right set of wheels makes a big difference to the looks.

Mine looks a lot better on cesaros I think:

But the mrs has nicked those for our 172 at the moment, lol

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Agreed, much cleaner.

The right wheels is the difference between Chav and Epic.

True, but still relatively low on my list of priorities for a car that only really gets used on track so im not too bothered those got pinched by my other half for her clio, the right suspension for example is the difference between still in one piece or not potentially, lol

Great video, think you posted it awhile back somewhere else. Corsa seems interesting, will have to have a nose this weekend :)

talk about thread jacking! Your corsa offends my eyes. I dont like Vauxhall. I know its your thread but I really dont like Vauxhalls...

Back to the OP, love that tripod picture! Looks like a really tidy Mk1. Good video as well!

Its not particuarly tidy TBH, one arch is starting to go a bit now in typical mk1 fashion and the bonnet is totally knackered from lobbing it on and off at trackdays (its on pins cause they front hinge normally)

As my mate always says about competition cars though, once polished up "it looks mint from the grandstand", lol

Flol, thats ok mate, in your 182 all you will have to look at is the back of it briefly as it drives off into the distance :race:

the less, the better lol I might actually put the breaks on to speed things up! :p

Have you still got this Mk1?

Yes mate, still got it :)

Have just recently given the engine bay a bit of a tidy up.

It only needs a couple of new track rod ends and a geo setup etc and I'll be back out on track in it again, sadly though im working away from home till friday, so wont have it done in time for combe like I had wanted to do, hence I'll be in the corsa this time instead.

Might take it to the burpspeed day though, depending on if the mrs wants to take the 172 or not (thats her favourite of our cars at the moment!)

So in theory vauxhall wheels will go straight on then might be tempted to try some cav slabs as mines lowered about 50 mm on coilovers

No mate, they wont fit on because the clio centre bore is 60.1 and the vauxhall centre bore is 56.6

What I did was use some VW hubcentric adaptors (which are halfway between the two) and then we bored the centre to take the renault spigot, and then machined down the outer spigot to smaller enough to fit the vauxhall wheel, and that way they fit on and it also spaces them out to correct the offset difference as well (vauxhall are 49, clio is 38)

The mrs likes to be a bit different so I think she liked the fact she has never seen them on a clio before, its hard to do stuff that is different but still not looking chavvy etc like most aftermarket wheels do.

Sorry to put it like this Chip. But do you just own a collection of sheds/b*****dised creations?

Lol, yes thats one way of putting it I guess mate.

I like tinkering so all my cars tend to be massively modified, like my sierra for example.

Was like this when I got it:
100_0050.jpg

And I transformed it into this:
CD01_65DT8155.jpg

CD01_65DT8218.jpg

For trackdays I tend to use cheap and cheerful hot hatches etc as then it doesnt matter if I bin it or someone crashes into me.

That's the best sort. There is nothing better than tinkering and making a purposeful car.

Although his "cosworth" is very nice, didn't you throw that together rather quickly after an accident with the proper cossy?

Yes mate, my friend crashed my RS500, so we built this one to replace it:

Thats nasty :( Did said Friend get a punch?

No mate, but he was hospitalised in the crash so TBH I was far more concerned about him than a chunk of metal.

He offered to pay for my losses, but instead we agreed to rebuild it and he did a massive chunk of the more mundane work to do the rebuild, and I just did stuff like build a new engine and remap it and fit all the upgraded parts as while it was being reshelled it was the ideal time for me to do so.
