My Clio

  1.6 Astra Sporthatch
The story is as follows...

I bought the car in July 2013 for £2495, its a 1.2 MK3 in Monaco Blue and a 55 Plate. I bought it from a dealer called FCS Trade Sales in Rainham, and before that it was owned by a woman who did very little miles, less than 30k between 2006, and 2013. The car looked like a great buy, a fairly low price that would leave me some money to fix any issues, just had the belts changed, new service, had 6 months tax and 6 months MOT.

Since I bought it;

I found out the belts hadn't been done and had to get those done. (Garage paid)
I found out the service hadn't been done and had to get that done including brakes. (I paid)
I found out the tax disc wasn't for the right car (I checked before I paid in the office and it was, so must have been changed by someone as I was paying...)
I keep finding white mayonnaise type substance on the oil cap (Head gasket? or common fault?)
Gearbox is very notchy and is very difficult to get into first or second (feels like you're pushing against something that then suddenly gives and it falls into gear, was told it could be mounts by a very nice guy on here (Alot of thanks owed to Matt@codered and MartinR for their opinions as well as anyone else who has ever replied to my threads!) but the mounts all seem OK to me, no play and they don't look worn.)
UHC fault I think as the headlights often won't turn on until after alot of attempts and sometimes go really dim and won't turn on or off.
Exhaust sounds like there might be a mount loose possibly as its gotten a bit raspy recently.
Right rear arch has some kind of annoying rattle and the front right has some kind of annoying squeak. There's also a draught in the passenger foot well I'm told.
Paint is going weird on the roof with a spiders web effect.

Whats on my mind is the car to me feels like there's just never ending faults, I sort one thing, and something else just needs sorting straight away... I know owning a car requires maintenance and alot of this is just that, and I was prepared for the maintenance but having all the hassle with the belts, the tax, and the service just made me hate the car, and now finding white stuff on the oil cap that people keep saying is the head gasket, and the gearbox going notchy with first and second so you can barely change down into those gears has just made me hate it more.

Now, whats on my mind is what should I do? Should I keep the car, spending I imagine alot of money sorting the gearbox and all the niggly problems out until I'm finally happy with it, or do I just save up some more money, sell the car and buy another one from somewhere decent with warranty etc?

Sorry for the moan, just after opinions really guys :(

How long ago did you buy it from said dealer? Sorry just re read that you bought the car last year. Take it to someone off here and get their opinion on costs etc

Bought from the dealer 6 months ago, annoying really they're the nicest guys ever acting all friendly like a family selling the car, then you buy it... things couldn't be more different. Made a thread about them a while back on here, loads of people could find holes in their sales descriptions that I'd never have noticed (cambelt changes on chain driven mondeos etc.) Will maybe speak to someone tomorrow about the car, just don't want to take the piss asking someone a million questions!

If its too cheap from the off there lies the issue. Admittedly not every time, but most.

Have you checked the history matches with the mileage? Online MOT history may help

Think I did when I bought it yeah and it all looked OK to me. Will check it again later though, guessing you need the reg plate and something on the V5?

Knew it was cheap when I bought it, just thought how bad can a fairly low mileage and not too old clio with one lady owner be? Guess now I know! Thinking of trying to find the old owner before the dealer and maybe phone her and ask why she sold it/if she knows any other issues I don't?

I had a notchy gear box,get the oil changed and it's sorted. Your head gasket hasn't gone,it's from doing short trips which explains the low milage, sounds like it was used to go to the shops

Are you using the right oil? Ring renault up and ask what oil to use because I've heard that if you don't use the right one it'll go notchy

Right, so driving my car yesterday this sounds sad but the song came on that I always used to listen to just when I bought the car, and well I realized how much I once loved the car. Got a great job offer that I've taken recently so hopefully will have more money soon enough when I start work after sixth form ends. At the moment i'm debating raiding into my savings slightly now I won't be going to uni and arranging for a specialist to take a look at the car and if they can mend the gearbox and maybe sort the headlights (turn on 1/5 times?) for a reasonable price, i'll pay for them to do it and keep the car ( Matt@codered ). Need a good car for work and this one, while the headlights and gearbox have gone weird, has been reasonably reliable and if I can pay to get it all back to perfect for a reasonable amount ill do that. Worked out it would cost me around £200 just to change to an identical 1.2 because i'd have to get the black box moved over. So... If I decide to raid the savings and mend the car, come June when I start work you'll be seeing a long project thread! Plans will be coilovers or lowering springs, sports or GT interior (not the poverty spec extreme one in grey), Canasta Alloys, Spacers, Color coding and a scratch removal/detail.
