My Ma5da Race car build

ado

Last year I decided to finally take the plunge and build a new race car for the 2009 season. I looked at several series and narrowed it down to Caterham Academy and Westfield Championship. I had decided to that the Caterham was what I wanted and so I started the fund raising, unfortunately the last car was ordered before I finalised my plans which landed me back in square one.

I decided to talk to some people who raced Caterham’s to see if it was worth going straight into Roadsport B with a 2008 car. I wasn’t as keen on this option as the cars weren’t as good value as the Academy. Some people suggested taking a look at the Ma5da Championship and that was the first thing I did when I got home.

I did some research into the championship and it did look very good indeed. Spec cars with big grids made it very attractive and the plus point was low priced cars with some ex Max5 cars available from £4k. I went to a race and talked to the organisers and decided instantly this was what I wanted especially after hearing all the stories.

I started looking for a suitable donor car and settled on a 1992 Eunos Roadster V Spec as it had some nice bits that I could sell to recoup some money. Unfortunately due to personal circumstance I had to delay the build of the car. I looked at selling the Eunos to free up some space, I however decided to keep it as a weekend driver after I realised how awesome it is on the road. Some pics of it from early this year.

After 9 months of road use the time had finally arrived to take it off the road and start my eagerly awaited project.

October 09

I started to take the interior out so I could sell all the bits I don’t need and start planning. I took the dash, seats and carpet out which revealed some interesting battle scars.

Dash removed. I don’t think the original owner would like this very much. lol

We thought this might have been due to accident damage but we couldn’t find any other marks to support this theory. All the panel gaps were perfect with no other damage.

I decided to get another engine to rebuild as I didn’t want to rebuild this as there was too many component out of tolerance and this one kept overheating for some unknown reason.

I managed to get a 70k miles engine out of a written off UK MX-5 from the local MX-5 specialist. It was delivered in the back of a van as I didn’t want it in my car and left on the garage floor as I didn’t have bolts of the correct length. I sourced some bolts the same day and after some heaving lifting we got it onto the stand (I did the most important job of supervising while the others lifted it;)).

The engine is now sitting in the garage ready to go off to the machine shop for some improvements and will hopefully be back soon so it can go back together.

After we went over every part of the shell we discovered when it had an accident on the front N/S it bent the shell upwards on that corner. The repair on the car was a high standard but somehow they missed this. With an uneven ride height it would mean the setup would be extremely awkward and thus I decided to transplant everything I need into a straight shell.

Progress is slow at the moment but should speed up next month when I get the new shell.

quality!

I love watching the Ma5da challenge on MotorsTV. Proper good racing!

good luck with it!

really funny to watch, locking up everywhere, spinning out on the grass and stuff.

Hope you have a real fun season with it mate

Uploaded more pics from the engine strip down.

I do need luck if I'm going to stay within budget. New shell before I even started.:dapprove:

I'm sure I'll have fun. My bank manager may not though.:o

I now need to find another driver to split the rounds as my 1st one pulled out.:(

Eeeee that kink did not look good mate, eaasy to miss if the chassis measured up okay mate.

Cheers tony. It is quite frustrating but luckily I have lots of overtime to take my mind off this for a while and to pay for more new stuff.

Also managed to get a donor car that got crashed into on the N/S door, same car my new engine is out of.:) Just need to get a trailer and pick up the new shell.

New shell finally arrived. It is a 93 1.6 V special that has just been imported from Osaka. Last know mileage is 129000km. Looked over it this morning and it is in very good condition with no rust.

The saftey devices cage has also arrived so ready to go in as soon as the interior is painted. Will start swapping stuff over in the new year.

It is a long nose crank. The crashed donor is 1992 UK SE, my old one is 1992 Eunos V special and the shell is 1993 V Special. Seems I only know of one edition.

Good luck with! Found another driver yet?

No luck will 2nd driver yet but still got time.

ado,the wheelbase looks abit short to me and a tad too high but other than that not to bad;)

My extreme lightweight shell will offset the bad handling.;) Might need a push though. lol

Very competitive championship from what I read elsewhere. There are a couple on Northloop forum that race in it. Think everyone is removing everything they can to get as light as possible.

Good luck with the build, shall be reading with interest!

Just got the engine back from the shop. Waiting on the big ends for now so thought I'll put the head back together.
Bare head. All cleaned.

New valve stem.

Waiting on 2 valves.

Bottom end tomorrow.

Should have got the suspension components back last week but I somehow forgot about them. Need to take it on the RR when it is finished to run it in.

Also just found out the grid format for this year is 2 x 15min race which is disappointing but there is too many cars. The article wasn't very clear so I might be wrong.

Good to see some progress! Will probably see you out one round - this is one championship I really want to be involved in in the future. Full grids, very good racing and televised!

I need to get the car on its wheels in under 4 weeks so I can moveit to another workshop as this one is closing. Just waiting for the cage to be welded then rest can go on.

Refaced flywheel. Regs do not allow lightening or balancing.

Block awaiting some paint. Loving the nice new bores.

This week will be spent on taking off the suspension, brakes etc off my old car. Also need to fit the new polybush.

Cage waiting to be fitted. Should be done by next WE.

Will be building up the front a rear chassis assembly next week then the shell can just bolt onto the car.

Never seen a 5 with such a short wheel base... Are those 6" wheels from list 1a or 1b?

Pull your finger out, you've not got long before brands ;)

I stopped looking at the calender now. I'm too busy trying to earn more money to keep thinking about it tbh.

I tried some list 1a tyres but no one stocks them in this size.:( This car also has a space for alternative power under the bonnet.;)

Don't you think you should at least run the wheels under the arches ;)

What tyres you reckon you'll be using, I have to use A048R - apparently woeful in the wet. Great.

Hankook K110 control tyre on rota slipstream.:) Ours are built with good handling from the factory and don't need fancy tyres.;)

Tyres in arch mean it'll be lower = views blocked by car infront.;)

The racing will be interesting with the new format for this year, splitting into three groups and having three races with different groups or something. Sounds interesting! Will make good TV whatever happens.

Ado,

I've just joined up on here as I saw this place linked from one of my V8 Supercar ME videos on Youtube.

The Ma5da series is a great series, i've even had a dabble myself with a few rent-a-drives from Jonathan at Keystone. The car looks like it will be the business, car prep and setup is soooo important in this series.

I'm coaching a guy in this years series also, he did a taster race last year and fancies some more. He's from Saudi Arabia, Fahad AlHarbi. Again it's just a rent-a-drive but he just wants to build on his race craft. I should be at most race meetings with him so will pop by and say Hi.

I have LOTS of in-car videos from the MX5s on my youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/maxxuk just do a search within that for MX5

Here are a couple.

Not my favorite this first one as it was pretty expensive but it's the only one I spent some time getting the quality decent before uploading to Youtube.
The crash bit is at around 2:40 but the rest is worth watching for the close racing. It's 720p format so you can click the 360p icon at the bottom right to select 720p for best quality OR click through to Youtube for better still (inc Full Screen)

Seem to have got over enthusiastic with the oil.:clown:

Engine would have been finished today but the front oil seal wasn't the right one so need to wait for a new one.
