My MR2

  RB 182
Probably not everyone's cup of tea but i thought i'd chuck up a few pics of my MR2.

I originally bought this as a run around while i waited to go travelling with the intention of using it until the tax and MOT ran out then selling it spares/repairs.

I didn't end up travelling and have really enjoyed it the last few months in fact its probably been the most fun car I've had so decided to get it looking a bit more presentable so here's a few before and afters

1994 M reg rev 3, 140K on the clock, history till 100K rusty, filthy, one white wing mirror but £550 with 3 months tax and test and runs perfectly

Pics from the day i got it:

I've had the bodywork taken care of, put some refurbed alloys and clear front lights on it and given it a facking good clean! Also sorted out most the interior niggles but haven't got any pics of that!

Its all been done on the cheap and the car probably owes me about £800 now. I couldnt think of anything i'd rather have for the money :)

The N/A's all have slightly different power outputs. Mine is a rev 3 so is the most powerful N/A and has (or had) 175bhp. The earlier ones are 118bhp and 158bhp and the later ones are down to 168bhp due to emissions and are a bit heavier because of gay stuff like airbags and side impact bars :)

It goes well enough to be fair and the best thing is you don't have to be doing stupid speeds for it to feel like your going quickly!

I imagine the turbo's are a right handful. There's always people crashing them in the wet over on MR2oc lol

My mate bought one of these for 300 quid at 18 yr old. Was a beauty car and really fun to drive.

He sold it for a canny penny to when he had finished tinkering with it.

I've been on PH since seeing this

Can't help but think that a turbo would be a massive money pit though.

Nah, they're fine really, plenty of specialists, plenty of parts, they ARE reliable generally speaking. I own a Mk1 with the mk2 turbo engine retro-fitted, it's a very capable little car.

I’ve been considering a turbo recently as my renewal is due next month and it’s only about £100 more than what I have now. Mine is a daily though so it’s the reliability (especially when tuned) that puts me off.

Trying to find a standard one would be a tall order too.

I actually really like the N/A in it just loves to rev but still has a reasonable amount of pick up from lower down also sounds epic with the de-catted Mongoose it’s got on it.

Most people who’ve been in it are surprised how quick it is. I remember I was the first time I went out in it.

Also got a set of Ray’s to put on it which I picked up dirt cheap on eBay. 17 x 8J Fronts and 17 x 9J rears so should fill out the arches nicely. Probably have to get some new suspension sorted then too.

Bet that goes like stink, encountered many problems with rot on your MK1?

  Turbos.
IMO, you've made a mistake putting money into a shed. I would have kept to the original plan and enjoyed it for what it was!

Looks like a great turn around and I'd have thought u would get your money back with a 12 month mot. Providing you don't need to spend much for it to pass.

I had a rev 2 turbo with exhaust and filter. Was not a good daily as license loosing speeds where so easy to achieve, was fun thought and I sold it and was collected by a polish guy within 4 hours

Normally I'd agree but like I said its all been done on the cheap, is more or less finished and doesn't owe me a great deal.

If your interested here's a breakdown for you.

Car was £550
Bodywork cost me £150 (£50 for a new door and wing mirror in the right colour and £100 for the sills to be welded)
The re-furbed standard wheels with tyres made me £27 (they cost me £50 and I just sold the f**ked ones off it for £77 on eBay with 3 bald tyres)
MOT cost me £30
6 months tax was £120
New battery was £55
Non ripped seats cost me £40

Other than petrol and a few bits of trim I had from the scrapyard that's about all I've spent on it!

Total of £920 which considering I've already had 4 months use out of it and its now MOT'd for a year and taxed for 6 months I reckon that's pretty cheap motoring (I'd also like to think as it is right now its worth what it owes me if not more - you try finding a rot free MR2 with a new MOT for under £1k)

I did go to see two newer, lower mileage Rev 5 MR2's before I decided to have my sills sorted but they were up for near the £2k mark and the sills had started to go on both the ones I looked at so in keeping mine and sorting out the niggles I reckon I've saved a fair bit.

The wheels I didn't need to buy at all but got them cheap so when me and the car part company I'll be having them off and selling them separately or go on the next car if its an MR2.

Just keep it as it is and enjoy mate.sadly i think if you sink any more money into it youre not going to get it back

Whereas that abortion you've bought over on GTI6.com looks like a sound investment ;) x
