My new uber camp automobile. MX-5 Project.

  mx5 & 172
Re: My new uber camp automobile

please dont slam it and add loads of camber - it'll drive like s**t.

320mm trim height + decent fast road alignment = looks nice, works properly

sub 300mm trim height + loads of camber = looks nice, undriveable, uncomfortable and s**t at going round corners sideways or otherwise

I've done really low in a 5 and it does nothing but ruin them

Dont worry about it, it wont be going low just for the sake of it, i want it to be driveable too, i regretted having the clio so low in the end as it meant i couldnt go anywhere in it.

Re: My new uber camp automobile

Anywayyyyyyyyyyyyyy

The first batch of orders has come through, only small things to keep me going over the winter before the big mods kick in.

first delivery consisted of

IMG_0451.jpg

Westco Battery, I probably didnt need it, but peace of mind and whatnot.
New number plate plinth, Old one was cracked leading t the front plate falling off.
Ipod/Iphone centre console thing, never did like the ashtray.
Rockford Fosgate Speakers, Dont fit... Fail.
NGK long reach spark plugs + spark plug socket.

So far the new battery has gone in, now i know i can sleep easy, the iphone thing went in, and the speakers tried to, but they are 13cm, and mx5's seemingly are 17cm's :S
I need some sticky tabs for the front plate onto the plinth and will do the plugs tomorrow AM.

Also today these turned up.

IMG_0452.jpg

They provide the possibilty of having sidelights in the headlight and are much brighter, however, i may change them for sidelightsless ones in the future, didnt have time to adjust them, which made for an interesting drive, however after fitting them ii've decided if I was to do it again, id replace the bezels, screws and bulbs at the same time.

No pics of anything on the car as I dont really have the time and Its looking a little sorry for itself atm. :(

On the other hand lately the idle has been doing my head in, when rolling to a stop the revs drop to severely low, then slowly hunt back up. It feels like car is going to cut out, will the plugs solve this or is it something else i should be looking into?

Re: My new uber camp automobile

Love it Seb. Re: the price, where are people finding these dirt cheap mx5's. I had a good look around and yeah you could get a shitter for £1300 but good ones where like £2000 sort of money.

Re: My new uber camp automobile

loving it mate. One of my mates has got a mk1 aswell and they are great wee things to drive. Maybe slightly underpowered(1.6l) but more than make up for it in the corners with a decent suspension set up.

Thanks dude means a lot coming from the owner of possibly the nicest car on here.

Anyway, changed the plugs and the idling issue seems to have cured itself so im happy, Just waiting for my new bootlid and door bars to turn up, also ordered myself some TR lane door bars as a christmas present.

I have some waxoyl type stuff to underseal it, but i never have the time so will have to wait and see.

Re: My new uber camp automobile

Picked a set of these up without centre caps for a total bargain today, Not what im after but some spare wheels are always good and well, they are BBS.

Re: My new uber camp automobile

dont mess with the handling on MX-5's, they go wayward with just poor alignment. well, my Mk.2 did anyway.

keep the money in reserve for a Mohair roof to replace the vinyl one when it starts coming apart. A new roof every 7 years is the norm for vinyl, mohair seems to last longer than the bodywork

Re: My new uber camp automobile

they were a super bargain mate! Not what i wanted but saw them and thought someone would have to snap them up quickly!

Re: My new uber camp automobile

This is now being copied directly from mx5 nutz as i havent updated this thread for a while. :)

Feel this is due an update.

soooooo I bought myself these before christmas and they turned up last week. Still need bolting in but thats for another day.

along with this shift extension which makes changing gear so much nicer.
IMG_0480.jpg

then these turned up today. We have, a black grille, IL motorsports racing engine mounts and some magnecor kv85 leads, like mentioned above the leads dont fit as I thought they would, dont know why but they are staying on for now.

also bought a set of bbs off a member as they were too cheap to pass up.

Lots of money spent in the past week so will update as it all turns up

Well my avid viewers (are there any?) project mx5 is a go go.

The racing engine mounts, magnecor leads and black grille turned up earlier in the week. The leads have been fitted the others remain for me to attempt on sunday.

then on thursday on my day off I drove upto hagley to see Mark AKA jibberingloon and what a legend this man is, I can see me spending a fair whack with this man. Whilst there i spent a small chunk on 5 Ultra racing braces.

I bought: Front upper
Front lower
middle lower
rear lower
rear torsion

So far ive fitted teh front upper, front lower and rear torsion, then it got too cold and too dark so the remainder will be looked at on sunday along withhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

then today i got home at 7 and was greeted by a box on the hallway, now my dad sells screws, nails etc, so at first I thought it was related to that, then I got nosey and rolled the box over to see my name on the side and it was quite light and big, so excitedly but yet unaware of the contents i opened it and was greeted with......

oh ye forgot id ordered that
smile.gif
at first i was going to leave it to sunday, but meh screw it may aswell go out in the dark/cold

the contents goes as such

a very concise kit, i only expected the carbon fibre airbox, but the kit includes the induction pipe, which is pretty cool.

an hour later

31e80110.jpg

So i started the car and closed the bonnet, straight away i could hear it drawing in air, even on idle, then i took it for a spin and wow the noise above 4k is insane, and it may be the placebo effect but it even feels like it pulls harder. FUN!!!!!

Anyway, sunday is going to be a big day, coilovers literally made my clio what it was so the excitement of what they'l do to the 5 with the topmounts and everything should be pretty epic, bought a can of shock and lock in preperation and another jack to help me do the engine mounts. I literally cant wait.

So last sunday i fitted the HSD's and i must say its soooooo much harder then a new clio, stuff rusts more stuff breaks and the front assembly is so hard to get out nevertheless theyre done
a82db22d.jpg

need to get some pics of the rideheight had a small issues, originally i set the coils rear: 2.5 cm collar to collar and the front 5 cm collar to collar, as soon as i tried moving it i realised the front strut brace was literally on teh deck so had to temporarily raise it until my wheels turn up.

then today came these badboys

I cant decide what to do with front plate but i know for sure i do not want a stick on one, they just make it look gayer and it doesnt need any help

  Homo spec mazda
Oh deffo the plinths gay as but until i get to the stage where i can start sorting the bodywork itl stay, no point driving around with the 2 big screw holes in the bumper.

great updates mate. Good choice of coilovers and Intake. Also love the NRG set up ;)

Quick question aswell dude in regards to your intake set up. How did you get rid of the air mass meter?

Hey Firas, thanks dude means a lot :) i didnt get rid of the mass air flow meter, its still there literally just before the airbox, the NRG stuff is awesome, such good quality, fitted it on monday night with my new wheel and totally transforms the car

  Homo spec mazda

  Homo spec mazda
Only the one, I imagine itd be worth something to the Abarth.... sorry Fiat lot, maybe get someone to punt it up on a forum, or wack it on the bay, better there then sitting around.

How amazing is the Nardi? I've got the 330 on my MX5 and it's uber noice. Can't tell what size you've got there. Looking good so far.
