My new valver is not well, please help!

I purchased my valver last week with aledgedly full Renault service history. and the last service is stamped as 2k before its current millage of 44k. However i decided to take it to my local garage who i trust and have done all the mods on my previous car for a small health check and minor service prior to taking the car to belgium and Nurbergring in Germany. The mechanic phones me up today hes had to have the rocker cover off as oil has leaked into the spark plug chambers he said the plugs were swiming in oil. Hes changing the clutch cable at my request only to find that the two types of cable they have sent are different to the one thats on and the only oil filter that will fit is one designed for a williams as the valver oil filters he ordered were to long. Not only that but the air filter thats arrived was also wrong. Whats going on? is it common for mix up in the parts for valvrs or have i got a swapped engine out of an r19 or williams? I am getting rather conserned the car is not as mint as originally thought should i be worried any things i should be checking?

I would have thought all that sounds like an engine transplant. Please say you HPId the car b4 purchase? Check the engine serial numbers? Ring the garage where the car has been supposedly serviced and ask them what work has been done to the car etc. Cover your back and if all goes tits up sell it quick.

Hope all goes ok as I have been burnt badly in the past and it hurts bad......

on a lighter note if its a 2ltr then whats the problem, one engine conversion done for you!:p

its fine. they all sh*t to work on unless u got experience with em. how many has your local garage done before?? if none to one - then thats ya problem.

remember not that many places will even work on em, let alone have experience with em. ask b4 hand when u own a valver, very important

nothing to worry about there mate just inexperience with the valver

in order ok

plug in well means the rocker gasket may be one way out although uncommon ok a stupidly low 44k, other thing is when u top up if ur not carful it can go down the chambers. its not uncommon for owners to do this without knowing

clutch cables yes there are two type.make sure the guy doing it is good. mine went and it a took a stupid garage 3 weeks to do it and still did it wrong. there is one specific for abs models and one for models without

oil filters are identical as far as i know for the willy and valver so not sure

however if ur talking about a replacement paper filter then yes these are the sme for the willy and valver too

suspect engine conversion only way to tell is one the road a willy will pull hard at 30 mph in 4 th where as valver wint go no where also

valver limiter is 7.2k std 7.6 k if chippedd

willy 6.5k std and 6.9k chipped the willy crank cant take high revs

About the oil filter, if you order one for a valver it will be a b!tch to fit & take you ages to fit.

Get the one for the williams/megane 2.0, it is identical apart from having a nut on the back to tighten it with. Much easier to work with & will take about 2 minutes.

You are spot on mate with the oil thing !! Its so easy to get oil in the plugs without realising !! Its pretty normal for a little bit to spill when you fill it up !! I now use a funnel to fill mine, due to missing filler hole with oil and drowning my plugs.

The filters are the same.

I doubt its a 2.0 conversion just a mix up at either your garage, or at the Renault dealer.

Sounds like his trying to stall you from picking it up !! MAYBE HE IS WANTING A EASY DAY AND WANTS TO GET DOWN THE PUB !! i CANT BLAME HIM FOR THAT !!;)

Thanks for the help people you have helped put my mind at rest, still gonna phone the last garage though as they stamped the book @42k and its only done 44k. Now paul my mechanic recons the central electrode in the spark plugs which are those sh*ty triple spark thingies has totally rotted away, leading me to believe that they didnt change the plugs or there is another problem causing premature plug failure. As a bit of background info so you can assess the situation the car starts first time, no smoke at all and sounds quiet on tick over just like a new car really hardly a sound. Oh and f**k me when ya put ya foot down in any gear if flies but then it would its a valver:D

Doesnt sound like an engine conversion to me, although the 2.0 Williams/Megane Coupe lump looks identical to the untrained eye. But they all use the same oil filter, so I guess thats out as a possibility and doubly out as no-one would sell a Valver as a regular F7P-engined car if they knew there was an F7R under the bonnet.

Does the mechanic often work on 16v/Willys?? I learnt the hard way that unless they have experience of the cars, go elsewhere.

Oil in the plug wells - nothing unusual in a 16v and to be honest doesnt make a bit of difference.

i dunno what your gettin all worked up about clio14rt.......teething problems....thats all they are.....jeez...i was expecting you to tell us it was knackered or somthing........my valver had oil in the chambers when i first bought it....but that was the last guy.....didnt have a steady hand !!!....as for the parts comming through wrong....well sounds like the norm !!....if you go to Renualt with your Reg number....they should be able to tell you everything about the car...........ie original colour, interior spec, engine no.....everything !!............thats how i knew mine was original leather (made sure b4 i bought it!)

The mechanic has worked on everything from Gtir pulsars to Dodge chargers but has only ever fixed one valver, and that was years ago seams they are specialised units and should only be fixed by renault. I trust the mechanic which i think is worth a lot. He was the only one who would even attempt to lower my 1.4rt tortion bar and repaired a colission dent in the right wing, right on the crease and you couldnt tell it had ever been dinted. He did that for free as he was spraying up the valver bonnet. Anyway i will pass on all this wisdom on to him tommorow and see what he has to say. And once again thanks for the input, i am relatively naive when it comes to valvers.

also there does seem to be two differing sizes of oil filter both do the same job, smaller one easier to fit, but big un will go on also, tell your mechanic mate to undo rear gearbox link(looks like a dog bone, undo the one bolt on engine side), then swing engine back to allow oil filter to go up easily, tighten it up, reattach gearbox link, fill with oil, valvers are just weird to work on, Ive seen them stump loads of experienced mechanics, Renaults in general are weird to work on.

WHAT ????.....nahhhh u can get to the filter easy....put the car on a ramp !!!.... if you aint got a ramp...which i suspect your mechanic has !!... it take the rad out time !! but even thats a bit drastic just for an oil filter...i wouldnt do it !

Like i said he has already fitted the williams oil filter said it was a piece of piss coz its smaller and has a thing to tighten up with. The car is spending another night up on a ramp in the garage:cry:. The problem now is the clutch cable. I asked him to change it coz the clutch felt heavy. after about an hour pissing about two of them finally got it in and secure. However he rung me up to go and check it before putting the air filter hsg. back on as he said it feels even heavier and guess what? i can hardly press the f**king pedal down its so heavy. We checked the new cable against the old cable and they are more or less identical the other cable was for the abs model like someone said previous. Any help guys?, i need the car to be drivable for thursday, Belgium trip.......!!!!!!!!:D

Valver clutches are very hard to push down. Thats just 16vs for you.

I took my car to ATS recently and one of the mechanics tried to drive it...... he stalled it about 5 times and sid the clutch was extremely heavy.

however it does have its benefits so yuo can pull away quickly.

Theres nothing wrong with it thats just a 16v trait.

I WENT FOR A FRONT WHEEL BEARING FOR MINE AND WAS GIVEN THE WRONG ONE TWICE CAR WAS SAT ON DRIVE ON JACKS FOR 4 DAYS, ABOUT 3 DIFFERENT PART NUMBERS ARE LISTED FOR EVERY PART ON AVERAGE SO ITS POT LUCK UNLESS YOU HAVE THE OLD BIT NORMALLY

If you change the clutch cable it will be stiff for about a week, this is the norm, dont worry too much the car will be fine, try and find someone who knows renaults as it may be a bit of trail and error for your mechanic. Im not saying that he does not know whats going on, its just renaults are a pain to work on and most people will just decline to work on them!

WHats the prob people!!!!

Oil filter, genuine Ren part for the 16V is a slim filter with no nut in the end, because they should be HAND tightened only!

And whats all this of removing rad and using ramps?

open teh bennet, stand by the drivers side headlight, look at teh gap between headlight and rad, squeese arm in there undo on 15 secs and put new one on asap as not to drip oil all down the front. No more than a 5 min job!

Clutch cable, its heavy, but not that bad! If its actaully too hard to push for you and the mechanic (assuming you not both midgets with wilting muscles) then its fitted wrong.
