My Ph1- bit of restoration needed

  172
Ive had this a while now but never got round to putting up a project thread.

I had been longing to get back into a car that was more fun after the Vectra and then the temporary replacement Corsa and I loved my old 1.6 Ph2 and I always a sport and the phase 1 was my preference as it just feels more raw.

So about June I purchased this on ebay for £809, needed work doing to it even though the picture doesnt show much needed at all but I was happy with it.

Obvious major issues when I bought it:

-front bumper cracked and paint pealing
-bonnet dented
-knackered shocks all round
-airbag light
-generally was just a mess and not kept clean/tidy and up to scratch, dented and scratched wheels, worn seats, wheel etc.

So I set to work and started by gutting out and cleaning the inside of the car, ended up removing the tar that was somehow on the leather of the seats and had to sort out the fact they looked past it, a shave later with my old beard trimmer brought them up a treat, ignore the lines, they are just from the direction of me using the trimmer.

I then set about sorting the airbag light which turned out to be driver side airbag with dodgy connection so that was soon sorted

Next up was the aerial as the base rubber had all rotted and was not looking good, plus the original aerial is 3ft long and looks terrible. I had a batch of aerials in and fitted one of them, much better afterwards.

Next up was the obvious...audio, nothing special, just new cable run through the car, small sub in the boot that I can remove, 6.5" comps upfront which are amped, and a headunit which I had lying about with a cd fault and so converted it from a conventional aux to a music streaming headunit so I can have all my music at the touch of a button. At the same time I had Austin wrap me my handbrake cover, a pillar covers and interior wing mirror covers in suede. I dont have any pics of these fitted yet (dont seem to have much of anything that I have fitted :clown:) Wheel was also a complete mess so I swapped temporarily for a basic model clio wheel as I couldnt be doing with the leather falling off every second.

I then undersealed the underside of the car ready for the winter before getting hold of a set of bumpers and grille from a member off here (sorry I have forgotten names), however after collecting them I managed to break my arm at footy so it sat like this for the next month- unloved :(

IMG_20130726_185216_zps6a1e6796.gif

So whilst I was unable to do anything I felt it the perfect time to get together everything I wanted to fit, so I ordered myself:

Cooksport springs,
smoked side repeaters,
silvertecs all round,
polished foot rest,
battery cover,
tow eye,
new engine cover bolts,
strut top covers, (the above all thanks to Dan@MAD
smd's for dash conversion,
new boot panel,
rear ph2 lights,
replacement front and rear shocks,
2nd set of wheels so I could have my f1's powdercoated,
powdercoated f1s and injector rail cover,
front, rear bumper and grill respray,
hids and I am sure there is some other stuff I havent remembered but they obviously aren't important enough to remember.

Once I was out of cast I needed to get motion back in my wrist and one of the things I could do was clean the car so I set to work on cleaning out the boot, carpets, roof lining and under the engine bay. Havent got many pics but this was the spare wheel well after 45 minutes of cleaning, safe to say it was very minging.

My wheels and a few other bits then turned up :approve:

I then set to work on my dials once I had enough movement back and they turned out great, white smd's all round

Last 2-3 weeks ive been able to do things a bit more labour intensive so fitted all the easy stuff such as lights etc and then had my bumpers back so they are now on along with the wheels and annoyingly in less than a week someone has already driven into the bumper and left a lovely gash up the side of it. You can see it in the next picture just at the front near the bottom along with the cooksport springs and wheels now on and at the same time painted my callipers all round gloss black to tidy them up.

and how she stands at the moment-I really need to use a camera and not my phone and learn how to take a picture!

Next up are wheel spacers, gear box oil change, polish the lights and this weekend will be a change of all engine mounts except the dogbone mount as I have ordered the evolengineering one with the softer bushes so that should be here next weekend :)

I wont be selling for a while but thank you.

Took a few more pics today (although still not great) of all the bits I did add.

Nice and clean interior :) only thing letting it down is my wheel :(

Dan@MAD's work; gloss black battery cover, strut top covers and anodised engine cover bolts, also my freshly powder coated injector rail guard

Still lots to do before it looks even remotely tidy in the engine bay.

Engine mounts have been painted today but it got too dark for photos, gloss black to match the rest of the engine bay as the inlet manifold will be going gloss black too and then replace/clean/paint all the rusty parts and get rid of the shabby looking engine matting behind the coolant bottle, etc as its letting it down big time!

Fitted a new gaiter as the old was worn and knackered, gone for a grey one from a base model but I think it goes with the suede parts so itll stay that way for now, I may dye it blue later to match the seats, etc.

Any suggestions on how to sort my gear knob out? All the silver paint has gone to leave an uninspiring finish of white, its severely scratched unlike the picture shows.
No silver I have ever seen is a decent match or leaves a decent finish in order to spray it, if I was to sand it would it be metal underneath? If so could have it a polished finish.

Front bumper (with mark) :( I have the stickers for the front bumper so it looks original but they will be on after the front bumper is fixed and the stickers are being sent off to Ady @ N2grafix so everyone else can get hold of the stickers at what I hope would be less than the £30 they cost to buy!! I also forgot I picked up a mint aluminium bonnet in the correct colour for £30 a couple of weeks before the bumpers too which was a bargain :)

New exhaust mounts and new wheel bolts are also on the car now and I have a used gearbox mount on the way thanks to another member.
Engine mounts I am hoping to get fitted next weekend once dogbone and gear box mount arrive.

Quite a few things I still want to do and I am sure that the list will grow.

-New and not rusted to hell locking wheel nuts
-Headlight correction
-Retrim/dye the roof lining
-New steering wheel
-Powder coat inlet manifold
-Wheel spacers all round
-Gearbox oil change
-and MAJOR detail required

Cheers for sticking around to read this far!

Yeh it is the bumper, took me a while to get round to getting them done but I had it all resprayed and in less than a week of having it fitted someone drove into it when parked up and left it :(

FFS!!! That's why I keep putting my front end respray off. :(

It's coming on mate, will look great when finished.

Yep I knew it was going to be inevitable. I have been exceptionally lucky though as the body shop spotted it when I took it back to be polished and they have said as they have the paint left they will sort it for me next week at no extra charge. Just want winter weather out the way now so I can get a proper detail done.

Looks great what you've done so far.

Annoying that someone hit the bumper.

Very annoying but I will not let it stop me getting it mint!

Not much of an update other than after a trek up and back from Lynn I now have a very big cracked windscreen :l

Dogbone mount arrived in the post yesterday and a new upper gear box mount will be on next weekend and I will FINALLY have my bumper sorted by then hopefully as they still have not finished it :l

Been a long time since ive been on here to update but not a lot of progress has come on as I have had other things to sort. Giving myself a week this month to get more work done, so far ordered:

-New clocks for a replacement clear face as mine is severely scratched,
-locking wheel bolts
-wheel spacers all round

Will have a new set of headlights, indicator stalk as mine sticks, dog bone mount, front seats and a steering wheel hopefully before the week off as my current ones are driving me nuts with the airbag light keep kicking in and out regardless of the fix

I have since fitted the new engine mounts all round along with an Evol Engineering dog bone mount but I will be changing it for a stock one as its just too harsh for me so that will be up for sale soon.
Windscreen has also been replaced since the crack. Pics to come!

Finally had the time to start getting some more done and parts arrived thanks to, caymanr26 and Ph1 Tom but still awaiting my headlights and wheel spacers which were ordered first week of the new year

New clock face fitted now with no marks to it and I decided to retro fit the ph2 sport dial silver surround, looks much better now :approve:

Strange that, i did this the other day, found one at the local scrappy, bit of a pickle though, now have an inch gap between the speedo and the dash, as i sawed the bracket off so i could attach it to my old clocks, oddly forgetting that i had to attach it somehow, where there's a will there's gaffa tape and all that. also swapped my dial stalks with those red ones

I haven't changed anything from the standard ph1 dials, I've removed literally just the silver part of the ph2 dials and fitted it to my ph1 dials so its not modified other than for the silver surround to mount to.

Thanks, its getting there...slowly. Dials arent difficult if you are patient.

Finally fitted my front bumper stickers so its looking less bare now :)

And also fitted my gloss black inlet although it could do with me re-doing the lettering

Need to find somewhere else to get spacers now as been let down by where I bought them from and then I need to sort headlights out.
