Nasty Revs

Dudes, just thought id fire this one at you - when i put me foot on the clutch after travelling at about 40mph, the revs on me valva drop violently low and usually go back up to idle speed (which on mine is about 600rpm) however somethimes it stalls and i have to restart the engine - am thinking me alternator belt is a little loose perhaps (which im tightening this lunch time) but is there anything that it could be - have heard the word lamda sensor many a time......... i know this happens to a lota people with valvas

Cheers

Idle speed Control valve - could be dirty so spray it with carb cleaner or something. Check connections on the top of it too. Could also be Throttle Position Sensor but this needs adjuested by a specialist. Other than that, could be lambda or coolant sensor on its way out....

ok, there appear to be a number of things there - looks like its gonna be a loooooong old weekend! I dont know where half the stuff you mentioned is!!!

if it stalls while u r driving just stick it in second and let go of clutch :D

WEll, if you guys could tell me where these parts are that i need to check then that would be really good, i recently replaced the head on mine and now the engine rattles too! Not sure what that could be either. I wont ask as it could be thousands of things. I need to sell her soon and i need it running well - which it aint at the mo, its hardly enjoyable to drive anymore!!!! Fortunately ive got a mechanic mate who said he will have a look at it and will hopefully charge me quite little - hopefully! -

Roughly....

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is a red bit of plastic beside the airbox on the throttle body/inlet manifold (get a pro to mess with this though). The Idle Speed Control Valve (ISCV/ICV) is a brass/goldish barrel like thing thats right next to the TPS. Itll have 2 pipes connected to the bottom of it - one going to the inlet manifold and the other to the airbox/filter. Coolant sensor is on the side of the cylinder head going into the thermosat housing (this housing has a big pipe going from it the the passengers side of the radiator). The coolant sensor will most likely have a white plug. Lambda sensor is underneith the car on the manifold just before it meets the cat. As for the speedo sensor, im not sure - think it may be connected to the gearbox (??).

Hope this helps.

this happened on my golf and was just a badly carbed throttle body,

dont know where this is on your car, but shouldnt be too hard to find and clean out, before you try all they electronic guesses,

cheaper too!

Hope this helps to identify the parts. Throttle body is the part that the airbox bolts onto which contains the throttle butterfly. It is about 10/15cm along and bolts onto the inlet manifold (the big part that also bolts to the head and that has the injector cover screwed to it)

As for the badly carbd throttle body i dont think this applies as the clio is EFI and not carb as older golf are. I could be wrong but personally id try the other stuff folks have suggested first...

I had the same problem on an XR3i for 5 years. Just began to heel and toe and set the revs like a pro. It meant those perfect change downs while braking for corners became second nature and the engine was never allowed to idle. Must of saved myself plenty of cash on a fix but fuel consumption made up for that. Didnt save enough to get rid of the damn thing.

I never did find out what the fault really was.

Right mate, im having exactly the same problem as you with the williams, so your not alone, bought some carb cleaner today to clean out the idle control valve but am having serious problems getting the top plug off the icv

How the feck does it come off?

Does it just pull off?

there are two holes either side with black bits sticking out and thought maybe you have to push these little black bits in for the plug to release but they wont go in?

Someone help please???

Jim

Cheers

the plug jsut pulls off after you lift the tab.

Check the speedo sender, if the engine gets incorrect speed info it really confuses it and is typically the cause. Try hold rpm at 2000rpm, if its not steady and keeps fluctuating, its probaly that.

There is no tab on it mate, thinking about maybe putting a screwdriver under it and prising it off but dont want to damage anything
