Networking through the mains?

  Mk2 Golf GTI
Anyone tried it or seen it in action? I'm thinking of setting a network up to hook up my PC, X360 and eventually PS3 when i get one. Wireless is s**t for me, drops connections too often and is too slow.

Plus you have to buy the rip off adapter from Microsoft for the 360

Here's the sort of thing i've been loking at:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=46494&criteria=mains networking&doy=17m9

I'd be buying a faster kit though, seen one that does 85mbps and one that does 200mbps.

Failing this, is there any sort of splitter i could buy that gives me more outputs from my router? I've got a Homehub and its only got 2 ports which are cureently being used by mine and my dad's PC.

"Data rates of up to 14 Mbps and ranges of up to 200m over your existing household power supply"

yeah..you'd need a faster one as that sucks :p

200mbps one sounds cool...very strange though, never heard of it tbh!

I saw it in action on the channel 5 gadget show once but can't remember the name of the kit used.

The bald guy had all sorts of stuff linked up to it such as toasters and kettles that would come on at a certain time of day etc!

We've used it at work.. just because wireless didn't work around an old building.

Worked first time.. no problems. www.solwise.co.uk stuff we used I think?

In terms of "just working", it solved a lot of issues the wireless was giving us - and it was quick enough for what we needed.

Yeah we have used it for some distant plotters and computers at work, also in an old building. Works perfectly, think ours is 100mbps.

security ??

Not a big concern here, this is going to broadcast the information everywhere through the mains, how the heck are you going to protect it, firewall a mains?

?

The router will provide the firewall won't it?

Cheers for the replies, i'll look into them.

Basically i want it for running the internet on the Xbox and PC so i assume it would be fast enough for my 8mb BB? Does it have any lag? Can't be as bad as wireless!

The network is 'behind' the router so will be plenty secure enough.

I'd seen these but not considered them. Look like a viable option. My wireless to my 360 isn't bad, but just falls short of being able to stream the HD stuff I have.

I was going to just run Cat5 all round my house. lol.

If it doesnt say 1GB/s on the tin.. its too slow ;)

I would be more concered about the signal filtering outside of your house. E.G. to the rest of the street ! as technically they would be behind your firewall ! The chances are small that someone else in your street would have the same setup.. but you never know !

Drill + 50m of cat 5 + 1gb router.

Job done.
(or 802.11n like me)

Been involved with numerous wireless projects at work and also had a dabble with mains solutions too, too problematic and tbh both overated

Just get yourself some cat5 copper cable for wired 100Mb full duplex, or even cat6 if your NICs and routers/switches support 1Gb, for sustained throughput thats reliable with no headaches wired connections is still far superior to anything else bar none

This is what I mean !!!!

Anyhow, imagine this solution in a office block with several offices using the same system !!!
