new 172 feels slow

  Rb182cup+s2 rallye
Ive had my 172 a week or two now and i love it to bits but cant help but feel that its just not all i was expecting it to be. coming from a 1.2 it felt fast at the start but after a day or two it wore off :(

Is there anything i can do to increase performance that i can get away with not telling insurance about as its 1800 allready or is there anything that might cause it to underperform?

or maybe is it a case of me reading all these storys on here for the past year and overhyping the car.

other than that im totally in love with the car its everything i want in a car.
just put a carbon splitter on it and plan to refurb the wheels anthracite and for crimbo a ktech 182 replica exhaust.
got it for 5.5k with 23k on the clock 2 owners and in pretty much imaculate condition so a ferking bargain (just needs new aircon panel)
heres a pic..

Ticking over is lumpy generally specially when first thing. Mine doesn't always start beautiful, its due a service mind.

dont rag the car round keep under 2-3k unless you just get used to the speed so when you do go for it you'll have a smile on your face

Are you actually driving it correctly?

You do need to rev it fairly hard keeping the needle over 4-5k.

When I first got my old VTS I thought it was slow until I learned how to get the most out of it.

Get it in 2nd or 3rd gear with the revs at about 4.5k and whack your foot down. You should feel a pretty good amount of pull.

Felt the same myself. While brisk, the acceleration in an RS is hardly what I would term neck snapping. The other guy is right though, it's all relative. Evo mag regularly comments on how even Mercedes AMG monsters feel sluggish after getting out of supercars. Probably the best thing you can do is get yourself into a 1.2 litre car again for a week or two! That'll snap things into perspective again!

Drive a slower car. I've just bought a 147 1.6 Twin Spark for my girlfriend. 120 bhp and 0-60 in around 10 seconds. It's not slow by any stretch and I've been driving it since wednesday last week.

Then I got into the bullet this morning and I was overwhelmed. I couldn't get over the pace from something so small and feminine looking. And this is a car I have owned for well over a year. Bring on those diesel drivers.

A clio is never going to feel neck snapping in terms of acceleration, primarily because of its torque figure and torque delivery. Its quite linear in its acceleration, a constant increase in surge from tickover up to its maximum power at 6500 rpm.

This kind of power delivery is never going to give neck snapping acceleration as its a progressive type of delivery.

Unlike say turbo diesels, which have very poor throttle response, and turbo lag, which means you get nothing, and then a big lump of torque that wafts you along, which make cars like this seem far more accelerative than they really are in reality.

Nevertheless, keep your right foot mashed into the accelerator pedal through the gears, and you'll realise that this is a quick car.

Obviously poor aerodynamics hamper its a high speed ability (an example of this is a mk1 Octavia vRS which can top 146 mph while have 2 PS less power than a 182).

Between 0 and 100, the clio, when driven right, is a quick car, especially for a supermini.

It would seem however, that the mk2 full fast 172 variant seems to be the slowest of all the 1*2's. I've seen one review where that particular model couldnt crack 20s to 100, whereas the Cups and 182s, as well the mk1 172 all seem to be in the 17s region.

Still though, 20s is hardly sloath like performance, and i'd think with a few carefully considered mods it was possible to shave a good few seconds of that performance. Remap, good filter and exhaust should see pretty reasonable gains.

Put 2 tanks full of 98 octane in it, run it low on the second tank and fill it half way on the 3rd fill and see the difference.

My Clio is so fast on 98 that even after three months I still can't quite believe it.

Whereas on 91 octane (our lower grade fuel in New Zealand) it feels like I've got a hole in a piston.

It's the cheapest and most effective 'tune' you'll ever find.

Yeah....definately feels quicker in the passenger seat.

I remember being very surprised at how quick my 172 was when I was taken for a test drive in it before I brought it. Now when I'm behind the wheel it doesn't feel that quick....I just think you get used to it.

Agreed, while it's quick you are never going to feel the power of the car due to the way it is delivered. My ITB'd 17poo feels fast, but doesn't feel anywhere near as quick as my mates Scoobies, even though it will completely and utterly smoke them. Smooth power delivery is a good thing IMO, just look at the speedo instead and watch how quick it moves round

dont forget that it wont perform that well for the first couple of minutes whilst the engine warms up. I think its some sort of protection :)

i noticed that, floored it 1st when it was cold (had to to pull out of somewhere safely) and it has no go when the car is cold.

ok ta guys i allways let it warm up first ill have to try the different petrol ive only put the normal stuff in so far.

The trouble is you do get used to how fast your car is and very quickly.

Only thing to put it in any form of scale is to drive something slow. I found that my Clio 172 always felt pretty quick but I've got used to my Megane 225.

When I drive my Renault 5 1.4 for a while then go back to my Megane, I then realise how fast it is!! :D :D

Autocar's first test of a MK1 172 showed a 0-100mph of 17 secs (well run in car on 98 octane fuel).

A subsequent full test on UK soil with a very low mileage example running 95 octane showed a 0-100mph time of 24 seconds!

7 seconds difference and a subjective sloth compared to the '98 octane' example.

JACKO CUP 172!

get ya self a transit van then get bk in ya motor. have had my cup just over a year and think it is still quick. i do sometimes think it is slow and think it is fu**ed and then a type R comes round thee corner thinkin he is going to smoke me and it puts the smile bk on my face coz i know he is gutted that my lil clio is sat up his arse. . .

Autocar reckoned there was something seriosuly wrong with the car, i think it took 8.5 secs to 60, the one they had tested previosly did 6.7

  Clio 182 Trophy
I went from a Saxo vtr to a Clio Trophy and wasnt that overwhelmed with the pace of the clio - that was until i spent a few days getting used to it (feels bigger and more heavy than the saxo - because it is!!) then started giving it what for it!! and wahey!!!
It really does need 5000 revs pus before the real run begins!
..and twisty roads.
