New car question

right up punters heres a question for you....should i go for something new and shiny say like a 182 or pug 180 or do i say feck it to sh*te build quality and go for say a second hand audi, bmw and get something that will hold its value and might work properly?

go for something new and shiney, if something goes wrong youre covered, also not as expensive to run the clio as a bloody great bmw or s3 i should imagine.

  Tappd'd RS

I wouldnt get a pug 180 from what Ive heard - 182 should be a good bet mate, or pre-reg / 6 month old 172?

Depends what you want from the car. If your fed up with the Renault build quality and crap dealers then do you really want to buy another one??

I have just changed mine for a used Audi A3 instead of going for a new a 182 mainly because I have had enough of crap dealers and constant problems with my Clio.

As for warranty and cost of running - in my experience the Renault warranty was worthless, nothing was covered by it and what was covered they could never be arsed to fix. Servicing costs cant be any worse than the rip off Renault dealers either - £620 for a 36k service! Even if they do cost slightly more to service they also have less depreciation so you wont lose at the end of the day.

£620! feck me craig thats bad! what work did it need done to it?

That was for the standard service and also for new rear brake shoes and rear wheel bearings as they wrecked them when they removed the brake drums.

They also wanted to charge me at least £500 extra for additional work that needed done - rear shock absorber leaking, engine+gearbox+exhaust mounts were badly perished/split - and none of it covered by the warranty.

Also meant to say above that if you buy an approved used Audi you get a 12 month warranty with it.

 mine will be due its service if i still have it that is in november, only 7000 on the clock, feck knows what the damage will that will cost!

That will be the 18k / 2 year service which should only cost £130 ish - and they dont check the rear brakes so you should be ok!

  Mk2 Clio V6 / 996 C4S

Ive just come back to Renault from BMW and Audi.

My A4 had horrendous problems with water leaks and rear suspension, and my 330 had quite a few engine problem.

My old 172 never gave me any hassle at all, one of the most reliable cars Ive ever had.:)

Ive seen both a 182 and GTi 180 in the flesh at dealers recently while looking at lesser models. I know which Id prefer on looks, let alone the reviews. One car is getting the best reviews a hot hatch has had since the Williams and is winning every group test; the other is reviewed in relatively disappointing language.

IMO youd be unlikely to get a "problem" car. Ive done over 100,000 miles in my old 16V and Williams with no real problems - and every indication from test drives indicates that the new Mk2 Clio were testing is better built in every respect. Yes, there are some things Id have had done under warranty if the Valver and Willy had come with one, but theyre minor issues.

My opinion of "prestige" cars like Audi is very dim. Id feel cheated if I bought a car like that expecting higher reliability. These are mass market cars and the real reliability and build quality is in the most expensive Mercs and Volvos. My parents 1994 Volvo 960 was on the original brake pads and exhaust at 120,000 miles when we sold it!

I have to say that my garage (not Renault) checks everybodys brakes even when not obliged to, just because they are very thorough and do over and above what they have to, at no extra cost! :D
