new gearbox?

hi everyone.
im thinking of buying my mates 172 off him he said i can have it for £2000, its on a 52plate and is just on 62000 miles. The only thing up with it is that the 5th gear dont work. He said he was driving on the motorway in 5th and the gear disappeared. he said when he selected 5th it was as if it was in neutral.
could it be that the 5th gear needs replacing or the whole gearbox?

thanks

easier to just stick a gear box in probs cheaper aswell. make sure its not a linkage prob first tho .

thanks for the reply. how much is a 172 gearbox? what range of gearboxs can fit it e.g 172 (02-55) or even a 182 (02-55)??

thanks for the help.

182 box doesnt fit it, driveshafts are a different length iirc?

not worth while stripping the box just change it for a new one, you can pick them up for a couple of hundred on ebay/forum etc (i payed £112 for a 1.2 box with 8k on the clock from a scrappies!)

your looking for a 172 gearbox from 2001-2004, not sure if you can use a cup box due to it having a speedo drive (i know you cant use a FF box on a cup not sure about the other way round)

ph1 172 box should fit but has longer ratios so your better sticking with a mk2 box

A 182 box will fit fine, my old 172 had a 182 box in it with a bolted diff retainer as it was made in the crossover period had a 182 engine in it too obviously with the 172 fanimold and map.

The only limitation is you need one sans speedo drive if its a FF and one with if its a cup, tbh you want an exact replacement but the exact model number of is evading me.
