new ICE

Hi all, after using my standard kit for a few weeks after buying my car, I want to change the complete system, but dont know where 2 start! Ive looked at a few head units, but i want to be able to keep the steering controls and screen still working, and i think only sonys can do this. Also, where can i fit a sub and amp in the boot??? What is the black bar across the back seat in the boot??? How do i get around it when fitting a sub?

My total budget is around £700, can anyone recommend any thing??? Any help appreciated!!!

you can fit a sub and amp anywhere in the boot, just let your imagination run wild

for £700 look to upgrade the fronts and amplify them, get a sub and amp them, compliment them all with a decent head unit

you can now get the alpine 7893R for around £225

about £150 will get you a half decent sub - look along the lines of phoenix gold, boston acoustics, jl audio, focal

same again for the front components

and see what ytou can do with regards to picking up a 4 channel amp which will cover the front components and sub -

the black bar in the boot is useless, it is for the luggage net, that only the priveleged get supplies with

shouldnt hinder the installation of any ICE equipent

Had a look in the gallery, looks good, but doesnt really help me!!! I want something that sounds good. By the way, where do people get the renault sport badges on the back???

you can buy the badges from renault theyre 20 ish !! part no. 77 11 291 177 Youll get Renault and Sport in the pack ! As for ICE you can install any head unit and still use the controls you just nead the right lead ! Personally I would go for an Alpine probably the CDA 9812RB only 240 !! and the lead for the remote is only a tenner ! see links for both !!

http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/acatalog/MCS_DIRECT_Accessories_52.htmlhttp://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/acatalog/MCS_DIRECT_Accessories_52.html The LEAD its the KWE 844E or 845E be sure to ask first as it depends on date and screen and stuff !!

Why not go for a Vibe CBRA120 its a self amplified 12 inch sub for the back ! Uprate the back speaker with some quality ones ! maybe alpine again ! then a nice set of components for the front ! along with an alpine Head Unit and hey presto on your way to some nice ICE ! let us know how u get on !

Alpine Head unit (9812) what cliosportcraig suggested - £240
Focal front componants - £150-£220
Directed or JL Sub (Studio or W3 Series Subwoofer)£150
Genesis, PG, Rocky, Alpine Amps.... You can either get a 4 channel amp & use a channel for fronts & bridge ur sub on the other.... Or you can spend a lil extra (maybe a hundred?) & get a dedicated 2 channel amp & a monoblock for the sub. Would be better.
Not sure that there is many wiring interfaces out for the screen, but like cliosportcraig said there is loadsa wiring interfaces for the steering stalk, but trust me, If you can get an alpine head unit & keep the stalk, it is MUCH better to do that than get a sony head unit & have the screen. sacrifice the screen, you will not regret it.

I might be selling my PG QX900.d monoblock & Directed Studio 12" sub soon..... just thought id mention that hehe.

P.S You might wanna try going around ur local ice shops seeing if any of there amps that are on display they will do a deal on, with a 12 month warrenty, they will usually drop 20%-25% off the price just coz its a display one, I got £200 off my front speakers, & still got all the manuals, boxes & even a 12 month warrenty!

Thx guys. Where in the boot is the best place to install the sub??? Shall I just take the black bar out accross the seat?

Im also not too good at wiring things, although i think i can handle the head unit. How do i wire up an amp, and whats the best way to do it?

No probs mate

Its your choice where you put the sub, its whether you need your boot for items to be put in there! Otherwise you can either put it up against the side, in a corner, back middle blah blah, depends if you need the boot for use.
As for wiring up an amp, I wrote a write up (bad english I know) on how to do it in a 106... But the concept is still the same, but obviously the grommets will be in different places! Ask a clio owner for where your grommet is...
See the below link about the wiring up & how you should do it.

http://www.street-race.co.uk/html/home/ice/wiring.html

hope that helps mate.

Im not too good at stuff like this, I think im gonna fook up my car!!!

Would you think its best to get it professionally installed or attemt it myself?? How much would it cost for someone to fit some stuff for me???

I can handle the HU, and speakers, but the amp wiring and sub im not too sure.

Right, after a week of looking round, ive decided on the Alpine 9815. What is the part number of the lead i need to keep the steering wheel controls??? Ive been trying to look everywhere for them! Ive got an 03 clio, but the ones ive seen are for 98-00! Anyone know what part it is and where to get it from, and also how much??? I swear theyre not a tenner.

no, they are much more expensive than a tenner

contact alpine tech dept on 01908 611556, tell them what youre after and theyll give you the two part numbers

Theyre a tenner from the link that i gave you it can retain the steering controls and screen if you want. have a look on the alpine website and see which lead you need for the car you have and look for it on the link i gave above ! plus wise choice wiv the 9815 its a quality Head Unit, the equalizer and i-personalise are good features ! Where r u ? dont get it done professionally ! if you need any help PM me or if ur local i can help !!

FOR THE LEAD FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS................ go to http://www.alpine-europe.com/http://www.alpine-europe.com/ then control in english. On the left click TECH TIPS then STEERING REM. ........ next ..... CLICK HERE then KWE-845E ( Renault ) and read the specs !!! and it is a tenner from this link http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/acatalog/MCS_DIRECT_Accessories_52.htmlhttp://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/acatalog/MCS_DIRECT_Accessories_52.html and you keep steering controls and screen ! just to clear that up !!!

Yes, the part that u need is a tenner, but the other part you need is 49.99!!! I went on the alpine-website on tech tips, and at the very top, thats the 49.99 bit you need for all the other parts to connect onto.

decided to go professional, only £25, including the adaptor, because to fit the adaptor to keep the steerin controls, you have to take the top part of the dash of where the clock is!

Right, ordered my HU, should be here tomorrow, cant wait. Anyway, anyone recommend a sub and amp for about £350? Should I go for alpine again, like the type-r 10" sub and an alpine amp, or are there other combinations that go well with the alpine 9815 HU???

How loud do u want to go ?? coz if you want serious headache then go for a Jackson fireforce F1502 (i think) its a 1500 W 2 channel amp and it only £170 then go for a couple of lightning audio bolt b2.12.4 subs 12" 750 W for £80 each. that will sound really good and loud! good choice of head unit ! be sure to use the i-personalize feature to create the right sound for you !

Oh and thanks for telling about the 50 quid bit ! i was unaware that anything else was needed ! what is the 50 quid bit neway ?

for 350, i would get either a JL, Directed Audio, PG or audiobahn sub! & either an alpine, directed, genesis, pg amp,
but like cliosportcraig said, it depends how loud u wanna go!
Directed Audio & JL both have decent sound quality too so you can have loudness & still have the bass notes in time & keep up with fast moving music.
Those subs average around 130-160 notes, then 200 on a amp could get u either a cheap monoblock or a decent 2 channel amp which u would bride for the sub. I have got my directed Audio Studio 12" on my genesis 2 channel amp atm (monoblock is in the post ;-)), & its loud! and with the Alpine 9812 HU its running off its very loud due to the powerful preouts & bass boost allowing it to go to +15 sub woofer level (i have mine on 0 for normal listening to give u an idea of loud it is lol)

I dont really know about Alpine amps, but I aint heard much good things about them!

if ur going to burning Bmth this sunday mate, my mates car with all my ICE in it will be there if u wanna listen.

so it costs 60 quid just to keep the steering remote working ? JESUS CHRIST What a rip off ! I really want the 9815 RB but if its gonna cost 60 and 350 for the head unit ! That works out to be a lot for some music ? Why not go down the local market and get a jewelry box wiv a jingle inside thatll keep you entertained ! (or maybe not)

Or just forget about the steering stalk? thats the best Idea i think.... & if ur that desperate for a remote, you can use either the remote control that comes with it, Or you can get the steering remote controller.

but lets face it, how far away are you from the head unit?!!? why do you need the stalk!

lol good point ! im always leaning over trying to find the right track neway so..........no point in it. even so 60 quid is steep (pull the finger out alpine) what head unit you got connor ? are alpine the best ?

ive got the alpine 9812 mate! Alpine is definetly the best for all around amazing performance for good money mate! theres only makes like nakamichi that beat em! but they are serious dollar!

Definetly worth it, i would happily scrap the stalk if it means changing the standard HU for an alpine! even ur standard speakers will sound better with an alpine head unit. its their sheer build quality & concentration to sound quality that makes them awesome. they dont waste their time like sony do with fancy gimmicks like flip screens n fancy displays etc. Thats why every head unit has the same design, coz they spend money where it matters. & their preouts are very powerful.

How much better did the standard speakers sound??? Do they sound good enough not to replace them, and then just get a sub, or do I need to change them?

HUs not here yet................. Getting a bit pissed off!

Yeah they will make your original speakers sound better but if you have a quality head unit such as that then you are not getting the full potential out of it ! I would deffinately uprate the front speakers to a set of components. My bro has Alpine D-Drive Components and they are sooooo sweet sounding with his alpine head unit. If you are on a budget deffo get front components over a sub... You can always get a cheap amplified box for the meantime to give you a little extra bass.

Where did u order the Head Unit ?? letsbuycaraudio ?

Right, just seen the post for wiring the $x60W alpine HUs. Do u have to wire direct to the battery and fuse it?

And is it true that the display dims and it distorts when u turn it up if you dont?

no the lights/display do not dim when the unit is turned up

yes the hu has to be hard wired to the battery for it to remember any of your presets etc., you can run it just off the standard ISO block but it will have no memory

nah lights wont flash, however, the head unit will cut out if you dont! it needs the extra power so take it straight to the battery via an inline fuse! as you are not going throught the original wiring loom you should be able to listen to your stereo with the car off!

& mate, it will make the original speakers sound better, but not good enough to make u wanna keep them! uprate them to a set of semi to decent componants! then get a sub at a later date or whatever! Trust me, Renault are good for building cars! not for getting their good stereos! Like most cars, even on some beemers they leave the stereo out due to most people just getting new ones straight away, anyways im going away from the subject! get a set of componants! :D

It looks like an absolute efoort to change the componemts at the front! Do i have to remove the dash? cos i dont want to be doin that!

Is there a way not to change the tweeter but change the bigger bit?

You mean the speaker LOL ! yeah you can just change the speaker but then theres no point gettin a set of components as the cars tweeter will use the cars LPF crossover ! so you may as well just change the speakers if you cannot be assed to remove dash ! Get it done proffesionally if you want the components fitted ! If not just get speakers, but make sure they are quality ones eg Alpine.... Rockford Rosgate....AudioBahn....Magnat (go for alpine) Good Luck ! let us know how it goes !

Got my HU, ill fit it soon! Anyway, im looking to buy a sub now, but i dont know what size sub to get. I was looking at 10s and 12s, but i saw something on here about 8" and even 6" subs! I listen to a big range of music, but mostly rnb and rap sometimes dance, but the occasional pop and even classic to calm me down! Wot would people recommend and not anything too big that will take up all my space in the boot?

Also, when using a sub, is it true that you damage it if u put things in the boot? I was old this by someone, but i dont think its true.

If you dont wanna take up too much room go for a 10" and this will cope with a wider range of signals better than a 12" ! Deffinately go for a quality one which will be able to keep up with fast paced music and drop real low for the bassy tunes ! JL Audio do a quality 10" sub have a look around on the net for a price !

Damage the sub ? What kinda things in the boot ? If you have any speakers on the parcel shelf I would box them on to reduce damage to either of those ! but dont know if items in the boot may damage the sub, but then again if they affect the cc in the boot then maybe but ask a real expert ! EVILICE >>><<< ??

I think I know what you mean johnny, as I have a 10 quid speaker grill to prtect my sub when I do groceries. You can get them from Maplin, just dont forget to buy the clamps for it!

yeha Ive got a speaker grill to stop things from damaging the actual cone! you never know, somet sharp might pierce the cone if you do sudden braking or a hard corner or what have you!

I personally think a 12" sub would be best for all types of music... however a 10" would be better for dance music coz they can move faster!
but you can get specific sub makes that are designed for small boxes! so you will not lose alot of boot room. Directed Audio subwoofers only require a 0.77 volume box to work their best. So maybe this is what you need?

Had a look at some subs now, listened to a few aswell. Think ive decided on a 10". Ive asked some more people about the damaged cone, and some say it doesnt and some say it does, but does anyone here know if it actually gets damaged??? Apparently the guards for the subwoofers dont work???

Also looking for a mono amp to run the sub with, also one that doesnt take up too much room. Had a look at a few, JL, directed, alpine etc, they all look similar, but do they make any difference to sound, or does it not matter for a sub?

Got my head unit fitted, its the f*cking nuts! Love it! The screens fine, everyone said theyre a bit dim in the day. All I need now are some better speakers and a sub. I havent fitted connected the steering controls yet, prob get that done when I fit the sub.

Right still looking for a quality sub now.........
