New Member-Expect Silly Questions!

  VW Golf
Hey guys. I currently have a VW Golf. Have been looking at the 1.8 GTi Turbo then i stumbled accros the Clio 172 Cup. V.Nice. Not 100% Sure about interior but still a nice car.
My Question is . . . .

Is the 172 Cup the quickest Clio

OR

Is the 182 Trophy (i Think) the quickest Clio

Obviously not forgettin the V6! :)

What is better value for money? What spec should i look out for or are they 1 size fits all because they were stripped of non-essential stuff to keep the weight down. Cheers ;)

This is a can of worms.

The Cup was stripped more so than the Trophy.

Basically, if you want basic rawness go for the Cup, if you want toys go for the Trophy.

I doubt you would be able to tell any difference on normal roads mate. A cup would maybe shave a couple of seconds of your track time if you took it on a track day.

Cups are about half the price of Trophy's.

Go for a Cup and buy some coilovers and recaros.

Cups look cooler anyway.

So what would you guys gor for? Trophy or Cup? I'd like leather, maybe air con. Does that mean i need the Trophy?

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
or if you wanted a quick one go for the ph1 172! hahaha

id go for the trophy more toys :)

I'd get the Trophy if you can afford it, Comes with teh leather Recaro seats, and air con, a great standard suspension set up and there was a limited run.

You'd be looking at 10-11k for a mint 05/55 with low mileage. Go for a 182 with both cup packs for about 2k cheaper, and spend that 2000 on gettin new exhaust, decat, cams, inlets and remap to take it upto 205/210 bhp. Jobs a good'n, everyones happy.

speed wise these is nothing between them. if you will be doing more than 10K a year miles i'd go for the cup. mainly because the trophy is/will become a moden classic collectible car. so you lower miles it has the better reasale vaule is.

  VW Golf
youd need more than cams inlet exhaust etc to get more than 200bhp

So how hard are they to modify? Golf GTi is pretty easy. It already has the Turbo so you can get over 200hp with a re-map, exhaust and induction kit!

182s also have twin exhausts which IMO make them look like a toy car.

Pay you 5 pounds to become a club member and then check out clio media.

There are millions of photos in there.

Come on guys. Its 50/50. Some say Cup. Some say Trophy. Can someone be so kind to give the + & - points on the cars. Compare them together for me.

Cheers ;)

If you like the toys and leather seats then the Trophy sounds like the best option. Depends what you want to spend really though, and if you like red cars lol.

Welcome btw :)

What are you going to be using the car for ????, e.g. a weekend toy with limited annual milage or a commuter hack which is gonna see lots of miles

I'd get the Cup, half the price and all this talk of the trophy becoming a classic is a bit premature... and to be frank it's a load of b****cks. They made 500, big deal, it's just got a fancy interior that you can buy yourself anyway and the sachs dampers are a gimmick... an expensive one at that. These have as much chance at becoming a recognised classic as the 172 exclusive. It will be fondly remembered as another derivative of the 182, nothing more. The fact it's red also works against it.

Good car, just over rated, it's no quicker than a Cup packed 182 for all intents and purposes. The Cup is the better choice imo, nicer colour, much lighter and will be quicker in most cases.

Agree with Debs depends if you like your toys. Big difference in price though, this is a guide below, -nobody shoot me down!

ph1 172 W,X,Y reg £4-5k for a minter.

+ The original and best, cable throttle, see for full specs www.fubarnet.com
- Steering wheels wear out, getting on abit.
- Cambelt needs to be done at 5yrs old or 72k, very expensive.

Ph2 172 FF Y reg-04 reg £5.5-7k
+ Xenon headlamps, fully loaded, cruise etc
+Facelift model
+ You can get flame red!
- Cambelt needs to be done at 5yrs old or 72k, very expensive.

ph2 172 Cup 52-04??? £5-6.5k
+ Quick, cheap (you can get a much newer cup with lower miles than the equivalent 172FF)
+ Good colour and Turini alloys as standard.
-Cambelt see above
-Dynamique interior
-No air con
-No abs
-No xenons?

182 04 onward??? -06 Plate £8.5k-10k
Every thing the 172FF has i.e Cruise control, aircon, Rs interior etc

+ xenons
+ extra 10bhp
+ Twin pipes
+ Good colours, Inferno, Racing Blue, Liquid Yellow etc
Do a search for the differences between the 182 Cup and the 182FF with Cup packs etc.

182 Trophy ?? £10k+
+ Trick suspension pack
+ Antracite turini alloys
+ Recaro front seats
+ Hold their value like no other RS as very collectible.

-Quite expensive.

This is just a brief outline that I have knocked up whilst having my lunch so no one shoot me down, and lets not turn this into a 'cups have no abs so crash all the time thread'.
Feel free to quote it and correct any mistakes I have made :)

The + & - points are relative to what you want from it.

If you want a totally focussed driving experience with not much in the way of so called luxuries for little initial outlay and cheap running costs thereafter, get a 172 Cup - I've done 84k in mine from new and still grin from ear to ear every single day.

If you want something rarer, with nicer seats and some of the luxuries, that will cost and depreciate a hell of a lot more, and arguably cost more to run (£1,500 replacement front suspension!), get a Trophy.

Before anyone says "yeah but you can replace them with H&R/Ledas/Bilsteins", if you're going to do that, save a wedge and buy a normal 182...because the front suspension and standard setup is what makes the Trophy unique. Take that away, and you've paid a premium price for a Red 182.

Tricky to get more power as said, without spending loads.

Up to you bud.

The Dynamique interior was on the 182 Cups.

The all original 89kgs lighter 172 Cup had a unique Mossa Grey cloth interior...front seats the same as all the rest but cloth not leather covers, and no side airbags (toooooooo heavy ;) )

It will be a weekend car that i want to modify. My dad had a cup but cant really remember it. It was fast, maybe i'll go to a few showrooms and have a look around!

  Breaking A 172 Replica
If its a weekend car get a cup.

Whack the back seats out get some buckets and harnesses in there.

Get some H and R coilovers, silvervisions Yozza/Milltek exhaust, Filter/IK and job done.

Should cost around 6500 all in and will look, sounds and go brilliantly.

If you did happen to crash it you won't be paying silly prices for repairs and as it is worth less in the first place you won't lose as much money in absolute terms through depreciation.

It will also be easier to find one and you have the choice of two good colours, mondial blue and titanium silver.

If it was my money I would be buying a cup without a doubt.

Sam
