New Tires - T1R's vs RS2's

Sir_Dave

I need new tyres for my latest purchases, the car will be used for track days, & occasional road use ...

T1R's are £30, & offer 'normal' levels of grip, so are fun on track. But the sidewalls are soft & wear isnt amazing. If i get a puncture i can go to the local corner shop and buy one with my sandwiches - supply is not an issue.

RS2's are £55, offer better grip & are a more track biased tyre, with stiffer sidewalls. But if i get a puncture, i have more chance of finding a clio with standard suspension. Camskill have them at the moment, but for how long?!

If the RS2's will last considerably longer than the T1R's on track, the extra monies might be worth it, & id be tempted to buy a 5th one just in case - but if wear rate is similar, ill stick with what i know :)

I dont want R888's.

Opinions/advice?

RS2's seem to have remained in stock for a while while V12's have not. Id sooner have the RS2, I dont like the TR1.

I had a set of T1R's fitter last year and the 1st 500 miles I hated them but love them now. Done 7000 on them an they offer plenty of grip and a fair amount on the wet too. I'm sure they'll be even nicer when I fit new rear shocks lol

Got T1R's on both our other cars (one FWD the other RWD) and really rate them - can throw it into corners that other tyres would slide and they cope every time, excellent in the dry and pretty good in the wet. I think the sidewall issues have now been sorted so they're not quite as soft - although still not the firmest thing out there. Haven't tried the RS2's so can't compare but you definetely get a good tyre for a very low price with the T1R's.

I've had RS2's for a while now, I really like them. Due to wear my fronts have now been replaced with Exalto's and I've still got the RS2's on the back. I'd say the RS2's just have the edge over the Exalto's in the dry. I can't give any information on wear rate in day to day running as I didn't take any note of the milage when they were fitted.

They held up well on track too, better than the Exalto's in that respect, and better than the Kumho track tyres I had previously.

Rs2's all the time mate, totally transformed my mates 260bhp yaris turbo, it used to spin its minge off on proxes he hated them, he switched to the rs2's and the car just gripped and went.

They're not so good in the wet but you shouldnt really risk driving like a t**t in the wet anyway :)

You do talk some serious drivel wee guy!

Nowt wrong with T1R's, not the greatest in the wet, but don't drive like a dick and you won't have a problem. No issue with Braking performance in the wet before that gets raised. Never tried the RS2's although i beleive Shilpa Shetty rates them highly.

I'd go for the rs2's. Not a fan of the t1r's (don't get on with the soft sidewall). The rs2's feel more responsive, for the use they'll get with you I'd say they'd be perfect.

You swear by 17s on a clio and now t1R's, whats next DTM exhausts and venoms?

T1Rs are ooook for the pennies but I'd rate the paradas over them in the same price bracket. Both an ancient compound so it's a mixed bag

TBH, i've stopped taking advice from people. I bought Vredesteins for the BM after everyone was raving about them and Magazines too...My overall opinion is....There Naff.

At the end of the day, i tried PE2's, ZV3's, T1S/T1R's on the 172 With exception to the Avon's there was nowt in it. The T1R's on the vee have lasted well, get a bit slidey on track but the overall balance is pretty good, they are also well priced. What's not to like,...

If it's of interest the RS2 will be replaced with a new improved design this year. However, Hankook UK aren't that interested in this end of the market are not sure that they will officially stock them in the UK. This will only effect your local tyre depots and anywhere that must buy from the UK distributor. Most online sales are sourced from the continent so will be OK. So if you're going to get RS2's, buy 5 straight away as the tread patterns won't match later on.

I've now driven 2 cars with them on. Crap imo. Soft, non progressive, shocking in the wet I rate the paradas above them.

They inspired no confidence at all. Infact the 2nd car I was in I actually asked the owner did he have t1r's on because they felt exactly the same as the first time I drove a car with them on.

People buy them because they are cheap per corner.

Non progressive, wtf is that meant to mean!

And the yoko's are softer than the Toyo's and worse in the wet.

Stick to the detailing section or Puma advice son!

Nowt wrong with T1R's for the price. V12's are a decent tyre. Never tried the RS2.

Eagle F1 is where its at, not sure they make them in 15"/16" anymore.

Have you Looked at Toyo R1R??

Bull pants camel boy, I drive different cars day in day out and those tyres are poor imo.

The paradas weren't great in the wet but as said I don't drive quickly enough to notice, I noticed it straight away on the T1r's at normal speeds It's my opinion.

People buy Yoko's because they are soft and offer superb grip in the dry. The T1r's don't sell themselves as a soft compound tyre like the paradas. You know what progressive means, it felt like they were either on or off and didn't inspire confidence while moving swiftly. Maybe on a better car they might have felt a little better but I don't see how.

Imo they are cheap for a reason.

I try and buy the best tyres I can, as i've always said they are the only thing keeping the car in contact with the road. Different on the vee if it's sitting about for the most part of the year but I wouldn't put them on a daily car.

I run the F1 gds3's. I think they are discontinued now though.

No i agree, tyres are 'pretty fundamental!' but the T1R's are fine, good enough for 8min 51 around the ring and 64sec around knockhill so can't be that shabby!

Each to their own. I like my hair smart and styled, you like it flopping over your face and gel'd with manfat! x

Ive used T1R's

didnt like them at all, theyre soft compound that dont offer overly good grip in the dry,
also agree with gally that they are very non-porgressive, theyll have grip until a certain point, then its all gone!
theyre a midrange/budget tyre, if thats what youre after, go right ahead.

just fitted parada spec 2s, and so far, i rate them much higher than T1R's, the lack of wet grip can hardly be noticed unless you really hammer it,
and the dry grip is great, exactly as soft compounds should behave. theyre not rated much higher than T1Rs, but for basically the same price, i know what id prefer.

Hmm, i heard this too.

FYI, i dont mind the T1R's, & their ultimate lack of grip isnt too much of a concern, its fun that im after more than anything with track days, otherwise id just buy R888's, id say they were more than comparable with the F1's i had on the saxo anyway.

Its the sidewalls that wind me up, think this pic explains why lol:

Personally, i love T1R's havent had much else since trying them over the last few years. There a "mid" range tyre but IMO the expensive ones for the gains just arent worth the money, its a classic example of a big price tag and people assume there great! and worth the extra, not always the case . For instance ive got some booist gauges, 1s a cheap import "glow shift" gauge others a £450 blitz digital boost controller, on the supra forums they wrote off the glow shift gauge everyone poo poo'd it, but i tried one......reads exactly the same as my boost controller, very accurate and still going strong. Ok so its not tyres, but IMO Toyos are brilliant value for money, the rest are just ripping you off for the gains on a road car......

I ran some prada's for a while, came on some wheels i bought, absolute joke in the wet, but did feel more ridged than the toyo's, however they did have a lower profile.

I've used both T1R's and Paradas on track and for normal driving - I've got no problem with either, plenty of grip for the money but the Paradas were better and seemed more durable in tems of wear. Paradas didn't suffer from the soft sidewall issue either it seemed

RS-2's, shouldn't be even thinking about it really Dave! Just look at mine and how long they've lasted, plus there good on road and very good on track.

just had mine fitted about a week ago, car feels spot on again, not really had chance to see what there like, but so far so good!

sir_dave - why not r888's? thought they where ment to be excellant track tyres?

T1R's became our main track tyre when i was at yozzasport, nowt wrong with them, get the car setup right and the pressures spot on and they're brilliant, see the yoz video of spa for proof ;)

Pressures are everything with T1R's. I get on well with them and they don't fall over on themselves like everyone seems to think.
