Hi there i am looking at buying a Clio in the not too distant future and hopefully a 16V model.



I dont have a massive budget - tops about 2k really - it seems like this will buy me one which is a good start.



What sort of things should i be paying particular attention to when viewing/driving?? I understand there is an issue with rust on one of the rear arches - is this easil;y remedied??



Also what are the three guages for in the dash in the middle - i can see them on interior shots but cant make out what they are for??



Any help would be mch appreciated.

Oil level (only shows when you move the key to position 2 then goes back to the bottom), oil pressure and oil temperature.

first of all how old are you? cos if your 17/18 your gonna struggle for insurance. 1 of my mates has a valver at 17 and hes looking at over £2000 insurance, and no dont get mum or dad to put you on a policy cos youl be classed as having no insurance, also IF you are a new driver you will die (probably) if you get a valver as a first car and certainly wont appreciate the car.

rust is on both rear arches as with all mk1 clio,s check the sunroof/aerial for leeks and if its a high milage check the headgasket hasnt gone, not cheap to repair!

oh and erm hi!!! course if your totaly out these age ranges then everything iv wrote is b****cks.

i would probably also not advise buying a valver for less than 2k as you would probably want a mint one so you dont have to worry about problems, saying that you may be lucky and pick up a mint one.

Wow - what a response - cheers guys!!! Seems like a handy place to hang out and get all the info i need.



With regards to age i am pushing 23 so insurance isnt gonna pose a problem - i hope!! With regard to how mucgh i have to spend i was looking at no more than 2k as its going to be my runabout for a year or so whilst i save for other things!!! The rust problem - is this easily remedied by a trip to the local bodyshop??



Stop press - just seen the blue valver in the for sale section - that is exactly the sort of thing i am looking for - although i need to sell the Audi first!!!



The 16v sounds like a mighty fun car - read reports of top notch handling and a nippy high revving engine - with a little fetting am i right in thinking you can have a proper HOT HOT Hatch??!!??



Well as i think of more questions i will be sure to post them up and if i see any ads may ask for advice etc.

I keep reading about people who say that they cant stick their 16v coz its unreliable, costs a fortune to run rattles and shakes etc - to what extent is this true??

I realise that coming from a german car which is considerably newer the build quality etc will be different but are they really unreliable and costly?? I currently run a 1.8 turbo which is great but fuel it definitely likes. Going to a N/A 1.8 such as a 16v is it going to cost me more to run??

as the 16v is getting on a bit things will go wrong (like most cars of that age)
when you go to buy one, check that it has service history, bills & that all work carried out can be proven NEVER take any ones word for any thing,
the rear arch rust can be a problem, if not done properly it will return.
Work does cost quite a bit, however a renault specialist will be able to repair it for alot less than renault them selves.

if you get one thats been well looked after then you will be fine, regular checks etc will keep it good health.
For 2k you may be liucky & get a good one, however as is normally the case it will be a dog.

Ive had mone for over 2.5 years now & although i did pay good money for it, its had a few probs, but nothing major, i still love it as well.

Just checked on the insurance and its only gonna cost me £380 quid fully comp which has pleased me no end!!!!! so thats one mjor outgoing lowered considerably from the Audi!!

The mods i had planned dependant on what has or hasnt been done on whatever i buy are (please provide opinions if you think some things arent worth it) -

Dark blue interior carpets like the Williams

Renault 19 16v alloys - you know the 5 spoke odd looking ones!!

Cream dials

Rear headrests (do they have rear headrests??)

Full service with cambelt replacement if not already done

A nice ice setup - not boomy and boy racerish but crisp and quality.

Thoughts??

just before i sold my valver i had it insured tpft for over £600 and im 24 and at the time had 3 years no claims

Admiral mate - i use them for all my quotes, some cars ago i was looking at a Supra and they quoted me something like £700 fully comp for a twin turbo!!! They ARE the daddies!!!
