New to the Forum, needing advice!

  106 quiksilver
Alright, currently got a 106 Quiksilver but its getting on a bit and getting rid.

Going to look at a 1.6 16v dynamique plus next week that my girlfriends dad and 3 of his mates bought worked on etc.

80k miles 4 new tyres 5 alloys new gearbox new clutch new cat years mot timebelt tensioner starter and battery all done been serviced etc so seems worth a look.

Does anyone have any pieces of advice when looking at the car, also any ideas on whether Ill enjoy it as much as I have my first car? I know its not the fastest but the weight and the handling were fun. Will i notice the extra bhp fromt he 1.6 or will the extra weight just make it seem similar?

Cheers, Marc

same pace roughly tbh handling maybe slightly down on the quick silvers :S

  Clio 182
hello mate.

I used to own a Saxo Furio, which is the same engine and chassis as a quicksilver. Then when someone crashed into that I got a VTR which is roughly the same 0-60 and power/weight as the 1.6 16v clio (according to Parkers anyway) definitely noticed an increase in power when got the VTR over the 1.4.

As for the handling i cant really help, only drove a non rs clio a couple of times and was just moving it a few hundred meters. In my opinion (only as a passenger) the clios feel more solid than the 106, so doesn't feel like you're going as fast! depends on your opinion whether that's a good or bad thing I guess!

in case you want some figures - clio 1.6 16v: 0-60 - 9.3 sec, power to weight ratio - approx 106hp/tonne
quicksilver: 0-60 - 12.4 sec, power/weight - approx 92hp/tonne

this is all based on parkers numbers though and heard mixed things about them :S

hope this helps!

  106 quiksilver
I done a power to weight calculator, had my 106 RR'd at 85 bhp. So i put it in at 80 to compensate for happy rollers (even after mods). Got the weight from parkers for th 106 and the clio sued the 110 figure for the clio and 80 for the 106. Came out with the lio having 10 bhp/tonne more than the quiky. Nothing spectacular but i suppose If im wanting a more reliable solid car its worth it.

Does anyone have any good links to prog blogs for my type of car? Had a look on here but couldn't find much really. Wont be doing much to this, lower it a bit and maybe exhaust. Need a bit of rasp

saxo VTR is cheaper insurance group than the clio i think too (could be wrong)

  106 quiksilver
Couldn't own a saxo unless it was a vts. Really wanted a 106gti as my next car, but a few things playing up in mine plus this car coming up makes it seem a good choice. Even if i just keep it a year, another years driving and my 1st year no claims (ive only been named driver for the first 2 years) then see what I can get after that

This phil as in the phil that ran the forum? If so your old gti is up in scotland with dave now. Probably know that though. I would mate but totally can't afford the extra 1.5k insurance. just a skint student ae haha

As in Phil that still owns the forum lol

Yeah Dave keeps trying to sell it back to me - but I couldn't go back to 106's to be honest

  106 quiksilver
Yeah, noticed a few changes the other night seems promising.

Why not? I love my quiksilver and hte looks it gets but if this is going to be the same pace and a bit more refined then why not.

If you can find a good on, a DCi would be better.

Quickest non-RS Clios going,

Only the DCi 100.

And then only when remapped.

So without a remap, is the 1.6 16v faster than the DCi? I'm not looking for a diesel, tbh im only looking at this car because its came up at a good price for a car with alot of work done bt 3 renault mechanics plus my girlfriends dad who is a mechanic /panelbeater. So Im going for a look, might not be for me but if not ill be stuck with the quiky

You've already mentioned most of the problematic areas that come up when buying a car, only thing abouyt the 1.6 engine is that they do like to eat pencil coils now and again, which can be expensive at £30 to be replaced each time.

No, the DCi is faster than a 1.6 16v when remapped. Remapping the 1.6 16v will do sod all really.

I'd go for the 1.6.

You can get them cheaper than that if you shop around. I've had two 1.4 16v Clios (basically the same engine) and went through 3 pencil coils in 3 years.

  106 quiksilver
Yeah I wasn't thinking about remapping the petrol, not unless i come into money and cams are a shout but even then I dont think Ill be ploughing cash into this.
Is the 1.6 faster than the dci then? obviously not a remapped dci.

30 quid seems okay if thats the most routine problem that Ill find? Any other areas I should look at on these cars?
And if I do decide to go down a bit of a modifying route, what sort of cash am I looking at for springs, a good exhuast system, induction kit and mani? And worthwhile gains or just hte usual free'r engine and noise?

  SEAT Ibiza SC FR
Firstly, don't bother modding the engine at all.

Secondly, yes the 1.6 16v is faster than the DCi 100, but not by much. It's definitely faster than a DCi 80. DCi 100's are like rocking horse s**t.

  106 quiksilver
yeah Just had a look seems a bit pointless, so worth doing a mani/exhaust change or leave that too? Any other ideas fire them forward.

  SEAT Ibiza SC FR
Leave that too.

If you want performance get better tyres and suspension. Keep the stock wheels, 15 inch is the best size for a Clio.

  106 quiksilver
Seriously? So no zorst? i just love a bit fo rasp, going from a peugeot sport exhaust to standard will be hard. It will be getting lowered, brakes? got bigger breakes on the 106 so again hard going back to standard. Altho the mrs clio brakes seem very responsive. (1.2 tho)

  SEAT Ibiza SC FR
If you want to ruin the car no one on here will stop you. They will laugh at you though.

Brakes are good on a Clio. Overkill some might say.

  SEAT Ibiza SC FR
Also you mentioned lowering, loading doesn't automatically make the car better. You'd be better off buying decent rubber for the car.

  106 quiksilver
Why would I ruin my car? not a modifying noob tbh when i say zorst I dont mean chav cannon liek you might expect ;) heard good things from ktec etc so what would be wrong with that. Also understand loweiring wont automatically make it a go kart, and also the importance of good tyres (toyo proxes only on the 106. Not quite sure what your expecting me to do to the car to ruin it but elaborate if you like.

  SEAT Ibiza SC FR
Lowz (above 45mm drop) and a massive exhaust will ruin the car.

Also if you change the airbox or decat it.

Or put a roll cage and buckets in a 1.6...

  106 quiksilver
Good thing I was planning 40, stealth exhaust, never mentioend roll cage and buckets (or thought of it) and also mentioned a few times about not much * spending money on it. but cheers for the input anyway

I prefer the look of 106's and they're more fun out the box - but they're so foooking unreliable
I did 8 years of spending weekends laid under my quiky/gti fixing them

18months with the clio and even though it was a dirt cheap high-mileage one it's never faulted once

  106 quiksilver
Yeah I know what you mean, every few weeks tehre something else going on this 106 so time to get rid.
Hopefully have just as much fun in a new car though.

Anyway cheers for the welcome will get some pics up etc once I've went to see the car.

Love my 1.6, Really great engine and you are always in the right gear. My mates got a quiksilver and i thrash him in the straights but on the corners he looses me, Probably because i have a poor suspension setup. 1.6 is faster that the dci 100 as standard. i wouldnt bother remaping a 1.6 as you get 8bhp... Im sure you will love the car. I havent had 1 issue with my car in a year and its had a pretty hard life. I modded mine slightly but havent bothered touching the engine bay as most things seem expensive as its a rareish car..

  106 quiksilver
Cheers mate thats a good response. How much mpg you getting on yours? I think ill miss the handling of the 106 but I suppose doing 56 miles to uni and back this will be a bit of amoney saver aswell

  106 quiksilver
Also, its a 51plate dynamqiue+ 1.6 16v....so what do i call it? I keep looking at different sites renault 2 mk1 mk2 renault 3 etc etc etc no idea what I should be looking at?

  RS6 C7
You wouldnt say you would prefer a black one if you saw the swirls in my paints and the fact that after 2 hours of cleaning it takes 5 minutes to be covered in dust.

  RS6 C7
Cheeky pik with my mates 106 ;)
