New toys - PC Upgrade time

Not my trusty old home PC, but my work PC.

As I only ever really use it to surf and do email I don't get upgrades that often, so my old Athlon FX 60 with 4gb of RAM and an nvidia 8800GTX is getting a bit long in the tooth.

Thanks to a friend at nvidia I've just had two new nForce 680Sli motherboards arrive and 4 8800GT graphics cards.

The problem is SLI is pointless with two monitors, but sod it I'll take the hit and just enable and disable it in the drivers when gaming or working. Assuming the two cards give a decent performance increase over the one.

I just need to order RAM, CPU and PSU now. Time to see what I can get past the boss.

So the point of this thread was?

To get a reaction out of you. :rasp: It's not even sport anymore. Aren't forums for c**k waving these days? lol

Which CPU did you go for David? Unfortunately I'm not able to take the piss like the dev staff on PC spec. Plus I've not been paying much attention to what's good at a sensible price recently, any suggestions?

It's an nvidia reference board, the 3 PCI Express slot model. The first one in the list. http://www.nvidia.com/page/nforce_600i_tech_specs.html

I'll probably benchmark it with the 8800GTX and 2 8800 GTs.

GTX will perform better ever so slightly. More so in SLI. Also you can triple SLI them in the future whereas you can't with GT's. Anyway i got myself a Q6600 as i wanted quad core support for future apps. There is a new version of this with a slightly high speed just coming out now. If you're not bothered about quad. you can pick up the new 45m dual core chips with high clocks for little money but i'm thinking your board might not support them. A good alrounder is the E6850, but again as always itt depends on your (your employers), budget mate!
