newbie looking to do a track day car

  JUST SOLD MY EVO
Hi guys, my name is Gaz and I've recently sold my evo 8 running 388bhp and 386lbft

I miss my evo especially as i sold it after doing a trackday at snetterton which was fun :) Any ways been talking to a friend of mine about a possible cheap car to use on track and he and a few others have said about getting a clio 172 or 182, strip it and have some fun maybe a turbo or supercharger conversion. I've read some of the threads that have been put up and enjoyed reading through them and getting ideas. What would you guys recommend, a 172 supercharged or i can make a turbo kit up, i know of a few guys who can make up manifolds and intercooler kits, or do i look at trying to fit a 1.8t vag lump or a megane 225 engine? Only thing i havent really seen written about in the threads is the remap option or aftermarket ecu to use. A friend of mine Oli who has a r5turbo is running a emerald ecu ( injection system fitted) and always liked my mate markey b orange r5 turbo :)

Like i said just wanted to say hi and get some ideas for the project.

  Ph1 track 172
if you want a cheap track toy, id personally go for the ph1 172,
theyre seriously cheap, and the cable throttle makes them more of a raw drive imo!

id stay away from the 182's as they tend to hold their value a lot better, and for the money, theyre really not much quicker!!

The reason you wont here much about mapping on here is because the gains are tiny, since the engine is fundimentally a bored/stroked/tuned 1.8 engine, theyre not that easy to get cheap gains out of them (remap usually sees about 2-3bhp). Unless you go down the charging route!! (look up bombers sc project thread, he ran 278bhp)

fitting the megane 225 engine is possible, but the box is too large for the bay, and only links up to the F4RT block. To make it fit you have to mod all the internals from an F4RT (megane 225) engine, into a regular F4R (clio) engine block and use it with the clio JC5 gearbox!!

hope this helps! and welcome to CS! evo looks nice :)

Cheers for the reply, the evo is now in sweden and the new owner has sent me pm's saying that the car is going well and shocks everyone who goes in it as it pulls hard and is quick. As for the clio had a look on autotrader quick and saw you can get a ph1 172 for around £1k so that will do for me as it will get abuse. Im thinking of going down the turbo route or supercharger and looking around 300-350bhp that should give me a power to weight of around 340-360bhp/ton once stripped. Is there any exhaust system that people recommend for track must be around 98bd so i can get on loads of track, seen fk konigsport coilovers are good, maybe ebc discs and pads ( used them in the past on my old nova and were awesome once warm)

here are pics of my old cars

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
so many comments to make, but I have to get this out as fast as possible...

EBC brakes are utter gash!!! don't even think about them for a track car, it will end badly

  JUST SOLD MY EVO
they are nice when warm but i know first hand not to try blitz the car when cold as i managed to spin my nova in freezing condition on a local hill when i tried to brake as a women was crossing the road and spun 180 degrees lol. All i want is a nice cheap fun car to rag around a track, not cost alot to buy bits and something i can get a nice useable power from. I will be doing rack days as well as the mlr sprints ( lancerregister/paceward own sprint series)

here are some promo vids.

  182cup & 172 racecar
Just forget all the Turbo and Sc crap,(defies having a cheap car),and just go out and enjoy what they are, which is great fun.

Or buy something else.

  JUST SOLD MY EVO
its hard cause ive had the gti 180 and loved it and to this day i still say its the most fun ive had in a car ( keep looking for my old one) the evo was fun, it had the power and the grip, and used it everyday to get to and from work and take the family out, but its a big car. I was looking at getting a evo 5 or 6 but the way things are at mo, id be better getting a audi a4 estate as a family car then just have a cheap car in the garage to mess about in. In the sprint as the vids will show in the guest class which i would run in i could be up against r35 gtrs, 1.8 turbo golf mk3s, starlet turbos etc so need something that will have some go to it, when you get to tracks like castle combe which is fast i feel the clio n/a would struggle but open to ideas and advise.

  Ph1 track 172
im also not a big fan of EBC, they dont get rated at all on the clios!

if youre going for standard callipers, most people rate
carbone lorraine pads with brembo HC discs, (braided lines and good fluid obvs)
and yozza's are normally the exhaust of choice!!

personally, id also say keep the engine as it is, and just have a dirt cheap car to throw round tracks, (which is what im doing). but if you want to have straight line grunt then tbh theres no other way of getting that kind of power other than a turbo!! (i dont think you could get that kinda power easily with a SC).
