Newbie! Possible New 182 Purchase

  BMW 320d M Sport
Hi all!

1st post, but i am a regular over at Tyresmoke.Net.... :)

I know you are all a bit biased over here :D , but i am looking at possibly purchasing a new Clio 182 in place of my 3 year old (soon) Audi A4 Avant 1.9Tdi.....

My circumstances have changed a little and i now dont drive silly mileage - about 20k p/a now. I REALLY miss a fun car for day-to-day driving, but do have an old Mitsubishi Starion Turbo for my Summer play thing!

Thing is, how is the 182 for day-to-day useage and ownership? If it returns me about 35mpg on runs i will be happy..... also, i havbe a dog (medium / small Labrador in size) - will she fit in the boot ok? I ***may*** have a new small addition to the family sometime this year and ISOFIX is a must (not in my Audi)..... the spec is the same as i have now - cruise, climate but with the added benefits of xenons / CD changer.

Put all this together and i can insure her for £40 p/m more and own her for about £30 p/m less (my Audi wasnt new)...... providing i can strike the 0% APR finance deal.

SO, can you kind people give me some of your advice on the car - i have read various posts on here today about differing reliability. Is the 3 year warranty / AA cover good standard? Oh, and can i use a cable to hook up my iPod to the stereo??

Many thanks in advance!! Maybe you can persuade me either way..... :D

Cheers!

the standard aa cover doesn't cover a puncture and the 182 has no spare. you can upgrade fro bout 50/60 quid. i just bought a spare from a scrapyard for 20 quid.

I get around 32/33 mpg out of a tankful which is a mic of town and motorway to work.

i don't get 35 mpg tbh. i am currently doing 27 mpg.

yo and welcome btw! :D

thanks Seb!!! Handy to know about the tyre.....

I am getting 40mpg in my TDi around town and 50 on a run at 70-75 mph all m/way. So, Clio doesnt sound too bad - as i say, my mileage is now only 20k, most business (i get 19p per mile), so pretty covered........

Its the reliability thats getting me! German to French - do i risk it!? :D

I'd be very surprised if you can get a 0% finance deal. I think there's only around 30 or 40 new 182s left in the country.

you have warranty my friend!

the only major issues that are quite common is the temp sensor gauge going mad and messing with the car making it run funny.

a few sensors get changed and all is sorted! apart form that mine has bee nfine. took long enough to sort that specific problem out though!

right.... cheers for that.... changes things slighty, but not drastically! I have found playing dealers off against car supermarkets and online traders works in the past, but like you say, might be tricky if they are so low in numbers......

When is the release date of the Mk III? Would it be worth waiting for this release to get a good deal on the existing Clio 182. I must confess, i am not a huge fan of the Concept Sport Mk III......

Or just go for it and strike a deal soon!! :D

Welcome to CS.

Mine is currently averaging 30 MPG.

As for the I-pod there are a few threads in the interior section about connecting one to the standard stereo. Favoured route is a Denison cable at 90-150 notes.

you can see 36 / 37mpg + whilst doing long motorway / A road journeys

reliability isnt an issue, if anything fooks up get it sorted during warranty. Build quality isn't fantastic but it's a lot of car for the money.

I would say 35 mpg is achievable as an average, but being a 2.0 litre sport most of us dont lol.

Reliabilty issues in my experience become apparant early on so your 3 year warrenty and this forum will help out a lot.

The build quality is not brilliant and you will notice quite a differance from your A4 with some squeaks, rattles and finish, but value for money, you cant really beat it. Many gadgets, 1/2 leather seats and swade dotted around, plus great performance.

The bumpy ride sometime annoys me as i occationally drive a MK4 Golf GT DTi which is smooth as silk but that is understandable for the price/ performance.

One serious let down for me though is the poor renault service which might convince me to move to a different manufacturer.

But as soon as you get behing the wheel, these negatives suddenly disappear and still enjoy every journey even after 16 months.

I would say a 182 is an ideal 2nd car if you have something more of a cruiser and sensible for the family. ( although for your child, it has a 4 star safety rating and the ISOFIX, plus you can turn the passenger air bag off with the key so is pratical in that sence)

Agree with everything Justin says. 35mpg+ is easily achievable at 75mph motorway driving in mine. Going to work in town I never drop below 30mpg. You'll get a few on here saying they always get below 30mpg and they do, but they spend a lot of time between 5 and 7K revs!

I'd get one there very reliable realy its just little rattles etc.
However when you realy get driving it you forget all there weekness.
I'd prefere a 172/182 with just 60hp than a 2000hp Ibiza you only have to drive them both to see how much more fun it is.

I've come from a WRX import with 270-280 bhp and even though the 172 is no where near as quick it's bloody easy to live with.

You get far less attention of scrotes, the insurance is good (if your over 30 like myself) and it'll happily get over 30mpg.

I would reccomend one....lots of fun too:D

thanks for ALL your help!!! I am going to pop down to my local Renault dealer (Stockport) in the next week or two for a test drive in one / see if i can borrow it for a day......

My A4's warranty is up in April and needs a service then, so may look to chop it in February, depending on what deal i can get.....

Looking around, i might go for a 12 month old model from a dealer (nationwide search) with 5-10k miles on the clock for 10k or less.....

Thanks again! Will keep you posted and will no doubt have more questions if it comes close to purchase time..... :D

PS - awesome forum - very welcoming ;)
