Newbie - potential 172/182 buyer

Hi guys & gals,

I've been trying to find out as much as possible about the Clio 172 or 182.

I currently own a mini cooper and have always been tempted by the Clio. I am now in a postition where I may well be a Clio owner by the end of this week - my only decision really is wether it's a 172 or a 182. (both models are available at the garage)

I know the basic differences (twin exhaust, weight, seats etc between the cup/full fat and the BHP) but nothing else.

Both models are non cup, both black in colour and both under the 13k mileage and about £1k price difference. The 182 is a November 04 model and the 172 is on a 53 reg plate.

I am really stuck - can anybody guide me as what to expect, what to look for, what should I be expecting? The mini has been a lovely car, fun to drive (but damm uncomfortable) I'm not a speed demon (rarely get the chance to be honest!) but i do appreciate the looks of the clio and also the comfort compared to the mini!

Many thanks,

Jean

hmm, the Clio is more about the drive than the looks...

if your not concerned about the drive get the 172, less warranty on it though. Warranty is handy when you buy French. suspension is the same on mk2 172 and uncup'd 182. so no real difference there other than the aesthetics, gear ratios are a little different between 172 and 182 too, mk2 172 might have a 6 disc changer under the passenger seat? bonus

Things to look for, leaking headlight washer, brake lights not coming on immediately when u press the brake pedal, signs of oil leaking around the engine bay, signs of oil leaking from the rear shock absorbers (specifically rear)

I would buy 182, because I feel if you the buy the 172, you'll regret it. May aswell own the better one! :)

  182 - Now Cooper S
i think you should get a 182 cup to be honest, for a little more you get a better, more attractive interior which looks more like a sporty car, if you get in a standard 182, you feel like your in a 1.2 dynamique, untill you put your foot down :p

i would advise that you ask the dealer if he can get hold of a cup, if not id look for one mate, i think you will be disapointed with the interior after a while, you may as well buy a 1.2 if you dont really want the speed anyway!!

and as for 172/182 its an age old debate, theres really nothing init apart from age, milegae and a few asthetics. i chose the 182 cup, and ive been very satisfied.

good luck.

Ok, I realise that for some people, performance is everything and looks secondary, for me personally I do appreciate (and respect) both. I don't get the chance to drive on the motorway/deserted lanes much and my day to drive consists of home to work and back, so getting the performance out of it won't be at the top of my list. Surely, that's not a bad thing?

The mini is a good car and I have enjoyed it, but I wanted something different now, but still in the hatchback category. The Clio is a good looking car and I find the seating alot more comfortable. The obvious performance benefits over the mini are a bonus really. I do really want air con/climate control. That is a must for me. I also read that the Clio has a pollen filter. I'm asthmatic and suffer with hayfever badly so it seems another bonus..:approve:
