Newly Refurbed Wheels... best way to treat/protect them?

  L'arctic Bleu Clio 182FF
Hey people,

I have just forked out to get my wheels refurbed, and chuffed with the results... the great thing about it is now the wheels are spotless!

Thing is, i want them to stay this way, or at least want to make cleaning them as easy as possible.... Obviously i want to protect them from the weather and from stone chips etc.

What's the best way to do this? I have read that some people use AG SR polish and stuff like that. Is that sufficient? Or are there better products for the job?

Thanks!

If you get it done professionally, then that should be the norm then right? Or not necessarily?....
They did the job very quickly, i.e. less than a day....

srp should be alright but i'd leave themfor a few days to fully harden just for piece of mind. ask the people who dont them whether they have been "baked" which will mean they will have hardened a lot already.

Did they take the tyres off ? Wet paint or Powder coat ? I would ask them to be on the safe side.

Yeah my 1 wheel tht I had done took them about 2 hours and I can see it was a bit of a quickie job rather than a full tyre off etc..as the laquer appears thinner/ feels rougher than on other parts of the wheel....watch out for this with refurbs

Oh n as for protection try out the Smart Rimwax, goes on/off nicely, gives decent protection n smells damn good!!!

The tyres didn't come off, and there is no powder coat on the wheels, and they have not been baked. He did the job quickly, but i don't think its been a rush job, because the finish is great. I'll get the pics up and you can judge for yourself, and i have absolutely no experience when it comes to wheel refurbs. I had a chat with him about this, and he said that the original wheel finish wasn't powder coated, because you can tell this when you rub it down as it flakes off in blocks. I asked if the finish is as durable to stone chips and fading/flaking as the original wheel, and he said that as long as it's been lacquered properly, then you will have the same as original.

He's a nice guy so i hope he is not spinning me...

The original finish as say is not powdercoated and as said wet paint is fine, I would not use SRP , EGP or the Wheels sealant on them till they have cured.

Cool, i'll get some pics up and you guys can give me your opinion as to how good they are...
By "cured" you mean just "worn in" a bit, i.e. let the paint fully harden and be weathered in a bit?

If baked in the oven to cure them chances are you would have been able to seal them straight away.

If they have not been baked I would not use an products with sealants in for 30 days of so while they harden.

ok, cool, thanks Rich.
Will leave it 2 months or so just to be on the safe side, and will make sure i keep on top of cleaning them! ;)

could you not just put some wax on like collinites 476. allow them to harden for the time stated then srp them egp and so on...

Thats the thing not to do - a wax or seal will stop them curing properly if they can't out gass

Sounds like a right cowboy job.

I got mine done last week, powder coated and the finish is as good as one of the new wheels i had to buy to make the set!

Tyres had to be taken off and they had to be left for a week.

To do a finish in 2 hours cant have been done right imo - I wouldnt even do it that quick with rattle cans

Fair play, you probably have a better job done than mine.... but the original wheels arent powder coated as standadrd. The fact is you are comparing chalk and edam... i'm happy with the finish i have, and even more happy with what i paid! If they last me a few years with good treatment, then its a good investment in my eyes...

I need to get my wheels refurbed, one is buckled (can you get those refurbed) and then the rest are all curbed? how much is it and where is a good place to take them?

  L'arctic Bleu Clio 182FF
There's places everywhere that do it mate, some come to your house, others have their place of work, best thing to do is start a new thread and ask for any good wheel refurbers in your area, then at least you have got some good references and arent going in blind...some people will probably be able to post pics too, which i will do soon as soon as i get a chance. Not sure if you can do the buckling, if its bad it may need a new wheel, kerbing can definitely be sorted, they will be rubbed down etc...

  L'arctic Bleu Clio 182FF
How do you people feel about Fairy Power Spray as a wheel cleanser, particular for the inside of the rim??....

  L'arctic Bleu Clio 182FF
Where he has done the refurb, he has not sprayed the whole inside of the rim, and towards the back there is some real stubborn dirt that i havent been able to get off with the usual soapy water.... will it be ok to use the power spray to shift it in a few months once the wheels have fully cured etc?...
I'm assuming it is usual practice to not spray the whole of the rim in a refurb?...

  106 GTi
Some places do the whole wheel some just the face.

I would try some clay on them now to shift it.

I don't see the point in refurbing wheels to be honest. How much does it cost, about £50 a wheel for a proper job, so we are talking ~£200?

Why not buy a brand new set and sell the old wheels. The price difference would probably be about the same.

  L'arctic Bleu Clio 182FF
I love the standard wheels, don't like all these rude boy wheels that people put on, plus i got an exceptional deal for all 4 rims that was nowhere near £200, so in this case, it was more than worth it! ;-)

Standard wheel from Renault circa 160 quid !

Im just on about how long the finish will last. Last thing you need is after one winter and a dose of wheel clean is the paint to start stripping back.
You clearly want them to be of a high standard or else you wouldnt have put this topic up :)

Renault might not powder coat to begin with but the process they go through, i would imagine, would be more involved than someone doing a wheel in a day job. You get what you pay for at the end of the day...

£175 quid per wheel new. Managed to get one minus the VAT for 140 ish but thats still way more than a refurb!

Going from what iv been told, if its a ''up and down'' buckle, they can be sorted, side to side ie buckled in the middle and its had it

  L'arctic Bleu Clio 182FF
Yeah, agreed. I know i haven't got the best job, but for the price i paid, if it lasts a couple of years i'll be happy, and they should do if they are looked after...
Can't believe the new wheels are that much new, is it just Renault that put an exponential mark-up on everything or is it across the board?...

  Skoda Fabia vRS
i simply use a cheap microfibre, its a lot easier to get into the inner edges properly than using a pad

Are you serious, once they are cool that's it, they've set.
