Nice big DTM crash

Very lucky to walk away unscathed. This sort of shunt could happen almost anywhere on any track (which scares the hell out of me tbh), but its part of motorsports and why its so dangerous i guess.

Not sure about Di Resta taking off the other driver, similar to Villeneuve's efforts in the V8's recently.

Crikey, I hope he kept the receipt!

Reminds of this one from Bathurst earlier this year for anyone who hasn't seen it...

That's the only problem with gravel traps/soft ground. Go sideways into them at speed and there's a high chance of a few flips.

This.

Having said that, without a gravel trap the car would end up in a barrier or worse, back on the track.

Not strictly true.

Looking at the Bathurst incident, if the gravel trap was tarmac (as is almost the norm on F1 circuits now) instead of digging in and rolling, he could have simply locked all four wheels, and the momentum would have carried him in a straight line until he stopped.

They've replaced a few traps at Goodwood now with tarmac. I had to use one of them a while back, very grateful I could still control the car and get it slowed tbh.

The only thing that gravel traps really have going for them is stopping cars with no control. Either if they have broken suspension so are just skimming or if they have failed brakes/stuck throttle. I do think gravel traps are more in keeping with tradition and mean if drivers want to drive on the limit they have to risk ending in a gravel trap. If its tarmac then they might get a warning for not respecting track limits if they keep using the run off.

Yeah, when using tarmac run offs, you run the risk of a car on its roof, or side or without wheels, skimming straight over the tarmac and having a much worse impact into a barrier.

Sort of a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation with tarmac vs gravel.

Just like Webber after the airborne incident at Valencia this year.

Having said that, if there was gravel there he could have been launched over the safety fence and out of the circuit as he was doing 170 something at the time

But it doesn't take much to flip cars over those fences. Surprisingly little infact.
