Nikon D40 zoom lens?

Me dads got a D40 and is after a decent quality zoom lens for xmas, anyone know best place to get one and recommend some good ones for me to look at?

ive got one of these, not too shabby, picked it up on the bay for 150notes... a good buy, and it has VR too!

don't mean to hijack, but what does the vr stand for? Is it something to do with the af speed?
