i think you will find that the top gear test are a good idication of how good a car handles and how well it performes. the reason for this is they are all tested on the same track with the same driver every time. you cant get more consistant tests anywhere.

AS we are being pedantic a cup (less air con) is 1011kg (EVO magazine) giving it 168 bhp per ton!

theres way to much figure quoting going on in this thread. you cant judge a car just on its power output. a 106 gti is almost no different to a 172 in terms of real world performance

my mates got a 106gti and its well quick seeing as its only a 1.6

Although the Clios can more than likely see the 106 off i think what most people are forgetting is that it was the handling that made the 106 so popular!

I used to have a 106 GTi and I personally do not think there is a lot of difference between it and a 172/182 in the power stakes, and the 106 handled easily as well as them too, it is a stealth car and shouldnt be overlooked, its only when you go above 90 that it starts to lose out!

And build wise I didnt have a single problem with mine until someone forced me into a set of trees sideways at 70 and it was written off! (Bloody good car to crash in too, very impressed with how it saved me!)

P 106 lack torque!! I drove my Vts after my 172 and god nothing when pulling out of courner at low revs!

Rich Hows they civic after the clio?????? Im wating one as my next car(will test drive soon) Im concerned about having to rev the thing to get its power> Ill be getting a year old one if I do

Same driver?! Think youll find they are different.

As for consistant, some are wet laps, others dry!!!



For an accurate comparison you DO need the same driver, on the same track, in the same conditions, so the Top Gear times are useless...

The Cup is 1021kg, without aircon and is 89kg lighter than a mk2 172 at 1110kg, climate control adds 25kg to a Cup, these are all Renalt figures!

Yeah, the 106 does lack low down grunt, but is very strong from 5000rpm and really comes on cam strong!

Very different to drive, the power delivery is smooth and theres more low end torque than most people think (http://members.lycos.co.uk/pug306rallye/CTR/RR%20Days/Rich_D_CTR_RR_Torque_Graph_01.jpghttp://members.lycos.co.uk/pug306rallye/CTR/RR%20Days/Rich_D_CTR_RR_Torque_Graph_01.jpg), the gearing is also very close so it doesnt need to be revved stupid all the time and you can driver it "normally" on a daily basis.

However if you want to drive it quickly then the real power is from 6000rpm when the VTEC kicks in and revs round to 8200rpm as standard.

Go drive one...
