noise from engine

i get a noise on my car that goes away when i turn the steering wheel slightly. it seems to be something to do with the power steering and makes a wining noise untill i turn the wheel. im a little woried as ive just changed the cambelt and water pump. any ideas what it could be??

I have a PS pump you can have dirt cheap as its just lying around, PM if interested

Have the exact same problem, and just changed cambelt/water pump too. interested to see if anyone knows what it is.

Hope its not PS, thats an engine out job i believe. eeek!

Engine out? WTF lol! have to take the headlight out and a few other bits and bobs, certainly not engine out

so are we agreed that it sounds like a dodgy power steering pump, or have the garage done something wrong when they changed the cambelt and water pump??

i had exactly the same problem with my 172 i had a fault powersteering
pump it was totally f@*ked!! at 64000miles it made a loud whining noise on full lock and cornering, roundabouts etc.
the answer to your question is yes it is expensive the pump alone is £240!!
i had it supplied and fitted for £488 there was i guy on this site selling one secondhand for a lot lot cheaper but the specialist garage i took it to would only fit parts that they supply.

i would recommend doing it asap as the bearing in my pump was F*&ked and could have gone any second! plus you dont know what other damage it could cause if it decides to cease and snap the auxbelt ie go into the cambelt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the engine on mind sounds better and quieter than when i brought it on 29000miles!! i had my cambelt and auxbelt full kit changed on mine at 47000miles and had no trouble with my powersteering pump until 64000 so i dont think this is a factor

the noise is coming from the front hand side of the car when your sat in it?? sounds as if the garage have tightened something to much

all i can say is you should probably take it back to where you had the cambelt + waterpump done and get them to have a look over it like you said it may just be that they have over tensioned one of the belts!! it does not sound like the exact same problem i had, good luck!!
