Noob help required! (Canon 550D)

  Turbos.
I've just got my 550D and put it altogether, attaching the 18-55 Canon Lens. Just started to play with it and i'm getting no autofocus. As with any camera, on half shutter it should focus, and the manual says there should be a red light. I get nothing! I've switched the dial from auto to Av to adjust the aperture manually and it will not move from F00. WTF have i done wrong?!

The Auto/Manual focus switch on the side of the lens? (i don't think you're this stupid though ;) )

It not moving from F00 suggests the body doesn't recognise the lens though...

Yeah, it was on AF. In the manual it mentions about it not focusing and to just switch from MF back to AF, which i've done. I then ran out of ideas after turning it on and off....lol.

Could i have put the lens on wrong or something?
