noob question about rev limiter

hi guys

so new to the 172 game!

what is meant to happen when i hit the rev limiter in say 3rd gear?

does the car continue to accelerate above the limiter but slowly?

had a weird one coming into work today, been driving for 30mins, mix of motorway and A roads, then came to a country lane and over took a lorry. floored it in 3rd and it pulled, got to about 5k revs (or above i think) then started to splutter a little bit like it was mis-firing, then i went into 4th and still it pulled but then i slowed down.

cold start from idle on my 172 is very good, i don't see any noticeable spluttering and generally the car drives perfect.

one thing to note is that i did fill up using Shell normal unleaded yesterday, ive still yet to try V-Power (only owned the car 3 days!)

any ideas? is it meant to do this?

Thanks

If you hit the limiter (6800-7200 ish depending on car temp) then a green light will appear on your dashboard that looks like a gear stick. If you hit the limiter you'll know.

ahhhh right, thanks mate, ive seen the gear stick light up when i turn the engine one but dont think ive seen it whilst driving!

il look for it tonight on the way home!

any ideas what else it could be? sparks, ht leads. coil pack?

i found the 172 rev limits were too restrictive as the sensor of the limiter is on the water temp, not the engine oil temp. You have to burn more fuel getting the radiator warm before you can get the most out the engine getting that limiter right to 7250k. Yours sounds quite strange though....maybe get it plugged in and see if anything turns up on diag? But usual checks clean air, spark plugs, leads etc.

If the green light comes on, you have revved it too hard. Peak power is around 6000rpm IIRC.

V-power makes no difference.

It's not a diesel LOL :rasp:

Cold limiter is 6,800 rpm

"warm" limiter is 7,200 rpm

The green gearstick light comes on a peak / optimum rpm for changing up a gear

Actually it means you have over revved, therefore peak power has gone.

Change gear wen the green light shows it's called a optimum gear shift indicator in the manual for a reason!!!!!! Any higher than it and there is no point

thanks guys

il do the usual checks and see if i can find someone local with a RStuner.

tbh ive not pushed the car hard enough to even think about bringing up the green light!

if the car is stuttering on the limiter, its fine. it has nothing left to give.
if its happening all the time, spluttering/mis-firing etc then get it diagnosed.
might have to change the plugs/coil pack/ht leads etc etc etc

Thanks mate, yeh it doesn't splutter any other time and no warning lights showing on the dash

il check it over just incase

Okay, if Renault say so it must be true.

It's not a shift light. I'm not sure you'll understand that but it's true. It's a 'Ooops, you've gone too far. You're an idiot and should have changed gear' light.

Peak power is at 6500 and drops away after that, and the light comes on around 6750.

Think this has ran its course.

OP, do a search as there is a massive thread on what the green light is/isn't. You will know when you hit the limiter 100%.
