Not Starting, Ph1 172 -

So had this a couple of times in the last week, normally in the morning or if it gets too cold in the afternoon

The car turns over but doesnt want to catch and actually start, first couple of times it happened a quick bump/stall then try again and it would start normally.

This morning though it need a full bump start which was pretty scary when only having 2 car lengths before almost going into the back of a parked car.

Could it just be a cold battery/starter motor or would it be something else?

So i went and got one of those Bosch s4 063 batteries after work, fitted it and still not firing up, cranking sounds a whole lot better but still not catching, wont even bump start and wont even start when being jumped

Weird thing is, ECP lists the 065 as the correct battery but following this thread below im led to believe that its the 063 needed?

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?724492-Which-Battery

is it just turning and turning but making NO effort to fire ?

Yes exactly this! well it keeps cranking but nothing.

Crank sensor? I've had this, easy job to get it off and sometimes just a clean up fixes it as they get covered in dirt otherwise just put a new one back in. its just above the gear box held on with 2 bolts.

Hmm thats food for thought, didnt even consider that!

Anyone else have any more ideas to check?

Only other essence I've can think of was was a cts failing on my old valver which wouldn't
stay started and would die immediately but I've had 2 instances of the crank sensor and that does what yours is and fails to start, I'd put a quid on it

Yeah air box out for easy access, its a curved bit of perforated metal a bit like meccano with a black sensor on it, short grey wire I think with a plug on the end so you can remove it and spray our with carb cleaner or just brush it with a fine wire brush carefully

My gfs car was not starting and just making a clicking sound, did a search on here, cleaned the tdc sensor and it started straight away, easy 5 min job.

I have literally just done it ten mins a go, well happy.

It will be the TDC sensor, very common fault. you can remove and clean but generally they need replacing. It's good practice to replace the connector aswell.

Cheers Bobby. will see how it goes cleaning it in the morning, hopefully it will start and i can move it from the bloody town center as its going to cost a fortune on parking otherwise. Once its up and running i'll see about replacing the sensor, can you let me know a cost?

Yh I'll get you a price tomorrow mate, their usually around £50

another thing you can do is bend the pins in the connector slightly to help make a better connection.

It's a computer that controls things like the lights, central locking etc and the ph1's do have them.
