Not sure if my exhaust is blowing

When i bought my 182 i didnt notice this metallic rattle i now have at low revs and cold...

Although since having it for a short time, i used the copper pipes cable tied in place to raise the tail pipes a bit,

After that i had a clunking noise which i found to be a loose heat shield which is now fixed.

It sounds like something is rattling, anyone had any similar problems? with the engine on i covered both pipes, i had a little bit of air resistance but im not sure if i sealed the pipes well enough with my hand to tell.

Its only on 53k but the OEM exhaust does look quite rusted around the joins at the back.

Cheers for the reply mate, ive done the heat shield fix, just used a bigger washer like the guide.

In the many receipts for the car the previous owner went all out at Renault and one of the things was a new exhaust part (which im not sure, but its not the rear back boxes) and a new fitting kit, again im not sure.

I might have a look myself, but i might just take it to a exhaust place and see what's blowing... Although i was hoping to wait until i get a stainless system on it.

Just jack up the rear axle, get the car on axle stands and just have it ticking over...I noticed on mine that the blow(s) were coming from just infront of the backboxes (where the pipe joins was very corroded) and the back of the cat.

When I got the exhaust replaced for stainless, I got the back of the cat done too...

If its had a new fitting kit, then it shouldn't have gone again (in theory), but you could have snapped a spring but that would sound a bit funny when you accelerate, then change gear...if its blowing, I doubt its there.

Yeah ill get it on stands and have a look i think, the max MPG im getting was 31.7, and im driving like a granny sometimes to see if it can improve, with the noise... i think its blowing and possibly losing me some power... maybe not but who knows.

If i find a leak, the paste stuff just crumbles doesn't it? id need high temp silicone ? but then again if i cover a hole thats blowing outwards it would just splatter out the way...?

I found mine was stuffed day before FCS and didn't have time to sort it there and then, so went to Halfrauds and bought exhaust putty and some bandage...put the putty in the hole and then for extra security, wrap it with the bandage if you want to. I got mine on the Trade Card and worked out at about a fiver or so, but did the job for the 6 weeks until I replaced it.

You put the putty on, leave it for several hours for it to harden (think you need to run the engine so it is warm first (not red hot), then leave it for a few hours). Just so it sets. It is a piece of piss to use, just don't get it on your clothes.

Is that MPG from a while ago, or has it been reset recently? Its not the be all and end all, and is (to be honest) an indication of how you are driving...as it will show an average, so if you're nailing it round Silverstone, but have been averaging 35MPG for several thousand miles beforehand, it will show low 30s/high 20s as an average.

Maybe reset the MPG if you're really that worried, but I wouldn't bother. :)

Ok cheers for the advice, ive got a trade card so might get the repair kit and fit it,

Yeah ive reset it a few times, i think in all honesty me jacking up the exhaust mounts is whats cause it to either crack or work lose and cause the blowing...

Hopefully ill have a newer system put on anyway
