Notchy gear change... new oil ?

  BMW M3
Right,

Just working things out as i lead up to my service.

Ive noticed of late, that the gear changes tends to be quite notchy and am sure it was smoother before.

Initial thoughts were to change the gear box oil but thought this didnt need doing till after at least 50k... im coming up to 36k.

So what would you recommend ?

Thanks

Gearbox oil doesn't officialy need changing but its a good idea help make the gear shift smoother less like stiring porriage.

Well, if its not too difficult and im changing the engine oil I might give it a go and hope it helps.

I wouldnt have thought it would be any gear box issue though. I tend to be pretty kind to it by never crunching and always getting revs to same level for down change etc.... Seems to change ok, just feels quite industrial.

Thanks

Changing the oil can make the gearbox feel very nice. I personally always thought it should be changed, I used to change it on the Gt turbo, quite a bit, mind you I smashed two boxes on that (my fault I will add lol)

Mine is krunching into 3rd when being pushed... and sometimes when on a sunday drive. I've been told 3rd is a weak point in these boxes, getting it looked at next week before it goes bang!

Royal purpel but its £50 or so.

The Millers 75/90 is good thats what I've always used in my cars. £40 or so it is.

I live near Demon Tweeks so get it from there.

Expensive oil like royal purple or Millers isn't a Halfords etc type product.

Yep garage can do it.

To check if its got enough oil you have to get the car on the level and try and get some more in if it comes out again then its full.

i have the same problem in first gear with my mk2 1.2. its almost on 90k tho so i really want to get the oil changed. does anyone know how to do this in the 1.2? i dont want to take it to a garage because they tend to rip you off with this type of thing,

I've writen the guide earlier on in the topic.

Basically undo the 8mm square sump nut let the oil out. then new sump washer (10p) then bfill with new oil sump nut fill ups on the fornt of the gearbox bit of a painto get to. Its full when the gearbox doens't take any more and cars on the flat and level. You'll ned some sort of pipe tyo get the oil in 3.5 liters is about what you need you'll end up buying 5 liters though as its cheaper than 4 one liters ones.
